Today's Americans would rather have a Thailand in which the majority is weak in every way while also subservient to the US,than have to deal with a stronger Thailand that might be more independent. It's not really democracy that America looks for first, but rather subservience, at home and overseas. Democracy and subservience are diametrically opposed to each other, since one cannot pursue both subservience and freedom at the same time. These are philosophical points with which people are, of course, free to disagree.
