การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาชั้นเรียนที่ส่งเสริมการคิดขั้นสูงทางคณิตศาสตร์ของนักศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรี โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพเพื่ออธิบายปรากฎการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นระหว่างการจัดการเรียนการสอน การทดลองเกี่ยวกับการสอนในฐานะที่ผู้วิจัยมีประสบการณ์ตรงเกี่ยวกับการจัดการเรียนรู้ทางคณิตศาสตร์และการให้เหตุผลทางคณิตศาสตร์ของนักศึกษา กลุ่มเป้าหมาย คือ นักศึกษาสาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมโยธา คณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์และสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ ชั้นปีที่ 1 จำนวน 34 คน มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีราชมงคลสุวรรณภูมิ ศูนย์สุพรรณบุรี ที่ลงทะเบียนเรียนรายวิชาแคลคูลัส 1 รหัสวิชา 401-12-04 จำนวนหน่วยกิต 3(3-0-6) เรื่องการประยุกต์อนุพันธ์ เครื่องมือการวิจัย ได้แก่ แผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ แบบบันทึกภาคสนาม แบบสังเกตชั้นเรียน แบบสัมภาษณ์นักศึกษา การเก็บรวบรวบข้อมูลโดยใช้การสังเกตอย่างมีส่วนร่วม สัมภาษณ์เป็นกลุ่ม วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลใช้การวิเคราะห์วิดีทัศน์ ผลงานของนักศึกษาและตรวจสอบความเชื่อถือของข้อมูลที่รวบรวมมาได้โดยการตรวจสอบสามเส้าด้านผู้วิจัย ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ชั้นเรียนคณิตศาสตร์ที่เน้นการแก้ปัญหาส่งเสริมการคิดขั้นสูงทางคณิตศาสตร์ของนักศึกษาซึ่งอาศัยการสะสมความรู้ที่ได้เรียนมาก่อนหน้านี้เพื่อนำมาสร้างความรู้ใหม่และขยายแนวคิดที่มีอยู่เดิมจากการแก้ปัญหาอย่างเป็นขั้นตอนและเป็นระบบในการนำมาสร้างความคิดรวบยอดทางคณิตศาสตร์ที่เริ่มจากแนวคิดการแก้ปัญหาจากง่ายไปยังแนวคิดที่สลับซับซ้อนเป็นหลักการกฎเกณฑ์ทางคณิตศาสตร์
