ลักษณะภูมิประเทศเป็นที่ราบสูงสลับกับภูเขาลูกเตี้ยๆ มีชายฝั่งทะเลที่เรียบยาวและโค้งเว้า มีเทือกเขาจันทบุรีอยู่ทางด้านชายฝั่งทะเลตะวันออกทอดตัว ไปทางด้านทิศตะวันตก จรดกับเทือกเขาพนมดงรัก ซึ่งเป็นเทือกเขาที่เป็นเส้นแบ่งเขตอาณาจักรของประเทศไทยกับประเทศกัมพูชา และมีแม่น้ำสายสำคัญอยู่หลายสาย ที่ไหลลงสู่อ่าวไทย ได้แก่ แม่น้ำระยอง แม่น้ำจันทบุรี แม่น้ำประแสร์ และแม่น้ำตราด

พื้นที่ของทางภาคตะวันออก มีขอบเขตจรดภูมิภาคต่างๆ ดังนี้
