ในยุคข้อมูลข่าวสารในปัจจุบัน หลายท่านมักจะได้ยินคำว่าสเต็มเซลล์ (Stem Cell) หรือเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดในสื่อต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะผ่านสื่อสังคมออนไลน์ ผ่านทางโทรทัศน์ ผ่านสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์ต่างๆ หรือแม้แต่ผ่านเพื่อนร่วมงาน ส่วนมากมักบรรยายถึงประโยชน์หรือความเป็นไปได้ในการใช้เซลล์ต้นกำเนิดรักษาโรค การชลอวัย หรือแม้แต่การนำไปใช้ในเรื่องความสวยความงาม และมีการอวดอ้างสรรพคุณที่หลากหลาย แม้แต่โรงพยาบาลเอกชนหลายแห่งเสนอโปรแกรมเก็บเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดจากสายสะดือเด็กหลังคลอดเพื่อนำไปรักษาโรคที่อาจเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตซึ่งมีค่าใช้จ่ายในการเก็บรักษาหลายแสนบาท ในฐานะของผู้รับข้อมูลข่าวสาร เราจะแยกแยะได้อย่างไรว่าข้อมูลใดสามารถเชื่อถือได้ และคุ้มที่จะจ่ายเงินเพื่อรับบริการหรือไม่ อย่างไร ข้อมูลดังต่อไปนี้จะช่วยให้ท่านตัดสินใจได้รอบคอบมากยิ่งขึ้น

สเต็มเซลล์มีกี่ชนิด อะไรบ้าง เซลล์ต้นกำเนิดแบ่งเป็น 2 ประเภทใหญ่ๆ คือ เซลล์ต้นกำเนิดที่แยกได้จากตัวอ่อน และเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดที่แยกได้จากสิ่งมีชีวิตโตเต็มวัย หรือจากเนื้อเยื่อ คุณสมบัติของเซลล์ทั้ง 2 ชนิดมีความแตกต่างกัน เซลล์ต้นกำเนิดจากตัวอ่อนสามารถเปลี่ยนแปลงไปเป็นเซลล์ได้เกือบทุกชนิดในร่างกาย ยกเว้นเซลล์จากรก ส่วนเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดจากตัวเต็มวัยสามารถเปลี่ยนไปเป็นเซลล์เฉพาะในเนื้อเยื่อนั้นๆ เช่น สเต็มเซลล์ของเลือด สามารถเปลี่ยนเป็นเม็ดเลือดแดง เม็ดเลือดขาวและเกล็ดเลือด
สเต็มเซลล์สามารถใช้รักษาโรคชนิดใดได้ โรคที่ทางการแพทย์ยอมรับว่าสามารถใช้เซลล์ต้นกำเนิดรักษาได้ มีเพียงโรคที่เกิดจากความผิดปกติในระบบเลือดเท่านั้น เช่นโรคมะเร็งเม็ดเลือดขาวหรือลูคีเมีย โรคโลหิตจางหรือทาลัสซีเมีย ซึ่งรักษาด้วยวิธีการปลูกถ่ายเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดจากไข ส่วนโรคอื่นๆ ที่มีการอ้างว่ารักษาด้วยเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดได้ยังอยู่ในกระบวนการศึกษาวิจัยทางคลินิก ซึ่งอาจจะให้ผลดีในการรักษาในอนาคตแต่ยังไม่ถูกบรรจุอยู่ในการรักษามาตรฐาน ผู้สนใจสามารถเข้าร่วมโครงการวิจัยได้โดยผ่านสถานบริการสาธารณสุขที่ดำเนินโครงการวิจัยอย่างถูกต้อง

เก็บสเต็มเซลล์จากสายสะดือทารกจำเป็นหรือไม่ บริษัทหรือโรงพยาบาลเอกชนหลายแห่งเสนอโปรแกรมเก็บเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดจากทารกแรกคลอดโดยให้เหตุผลว่า เมื่อเด็กโตขึ้นจะใช้เซลล์ที่เก็บไว้ในการรักษาโรคที่จะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตเช่น โรคอัลไซเมอร์ เบาหวาน โรคหัวใจ อัมพาต เป็นการคาดเดาอนาคต การศึกษาในปัจจุบันยังไม่สามารถใช้เซลล์จากสายสะดือรักษาโรคดังกล่าวได้ เพราะโรคดังกล่าวมีการศึกษาในเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดตัวอ่อนเท่านั้นและความรู้ในปัจจุบันสามารถสร้างเซลล์ตัวอ่อนเฉพาะบุคคลจากเซลล์ร่างกายชนิดใดและในช่วงวัยใดก็ได้ โดยวิธีดังกล่าวเรียกว่า Cellular Reprogramming หรือการสร้าง iPS cells (Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells) ซึ่งมีคุณสมบัติเหมือนกันเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดระยะตัวอ่อน ซึ่งไม่ต้องอาศัยเซลล์จากสายสะดืออีกต่อไป
ผลิตภัณฑ์สเต็มเซลล์ที่วางขายอยู่ในท้องตลาดเชื่อถือได้จริงหรือ ข้อมูลจากสำนักงานคณะกรรมการอาหารและยา ห้ามใช้เซลล์หรือเนื้อเยื่อ หรือผลิตภัณฑ์จากร่างกายมนุษย์ เป็นส่วนประกอบในเครื่องสำอางค์ จากประกาศฉบับนี้ทำให้ผลิตภัณฑ์เลี่ยงไปใช้ข้อความอื่นๆ ในการโฆษณาชวนเชื่อ เช่นซีรัมหรือครีมที่มีส่วนผสมจากสเต็มเซลล์รกแกะ หรือมีส่วนผสมจากสเต็มเซลล์จากพืช การพิจารณาว่าสามารถเชื่อถือในสรรพคุณที่อวดอ้างได้หรือไม่ให้สังเกตด้วยหลักการง่ายๆ ว่า สารที่ผลิตออกมาจากเซลล์ต้นกำเนิดที่คาดว่าอาจจะมีส่วนช่วยในความสวยความงามคือโปรตีนที่หลั่งออกมาจากเซลล์ต้นกำเนิด ซึ่งส่วนมากเป็นสารช่วยการเจริญเติบโต (Growth factor) หรือสารพวกไซโตไคน์ (Cytokine) สารเหล่านี้จะสลายตัวในอุณภูมิห้องได้เร็วมากและสูญเสียสภาพเพียง 1-2 วัน ถึงแม้ว่าจะเก็บแช่แข็งก็ไม่เหมาะสมในการเก็บรักษาเพราะการละลายออกมาใช้งานจะทำให้โปรตีนเสื่อมสภาพได้เช่นกัน ส่วนสารที่อ้างว่าสกัดมาจากสเต็มเซลล์จากพืชแท้ที่จริงแล้วเป็นสารเคมีที่พืชสร้างขึ้น ซึ่งอาจจะได้ผลในการใช้จริง เช่น มีส่วนประกอบของวิตามินซี หรือกรดผลไม้บางชนิด แต่นั่นไม่ใช่สารจากสเต็มเซลล์แต่อย่างใด ควรเรียกว่าผลิตภัณฑ์จากพืชสมุนไพรจึงจะเหมาะสมกว่า
