วันขอบคุณพระเจ้า หรือ Thanksgiving Day เป็นวันที่คนอเมริกันขอบคุณพระเจ้าที่ดลบันดาลให้นักแสวงบุญมาตั้งอาณานิคมใหม่ รอดชีวิตมาได้ตั้งแต่ครั้งปีคริสตศักราช 1620 หรือพุทธศักราช 2163 สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา

สมัยนั้น คณะนักจาริกแสวงบุญที่เรียกกันว่า พวก pilgrims นิกายศาสนาบริสุทธิ์ หรือ Puritanismออกเดินทางจากอังกฤษ โดยเรือ Mayflower มาตั้งถิ่นฐานในอเมริกาโดยมาขึ้นบกที่เมือง Plymouth มลรัฐ Massachusetts และตัดสินใจจัดตั้งอาณานิคมพลิมัธ หรือ Plymouth Colony ขึ้น พวกพิลกริมส์ ทำไร่ไถนา ออกป่าล่าสัตว์ และจัดตั้งบ้านเรือนโดยมีผู้ว่าการรัฐ William Bradford และ Miles Standish เป็นผู้นำในฤดูใบไม้ร่วงปีรุ่งขึ้น หลังจากเก็บเกี่ยวพืชผลแล้ว พวกพิลกริมส์เลยจัดให้มีงานเลี้ยงฉลองขอบคุณพระเจ้า ที่ช่วยดลบรรดาลให้รอดชีวิตในดินแดนใหม่มาได้ครบ 1 ปี เนื่องจากในช่วงแรกนั้นพวกพิลกริมส์ที่ทนความหนาว ความอดอยาก และโรคภัยไข้เจ็บไม่ไหวต้องพากันล้มตายไปถึงเกือบครึ่งอาณานิคม ในงานเลี้ยงขอบคุณพระเจ้าครั้งแรกนั้น พวกพิลกริมส์ได้เชิญชาวอินเดียนแดงพื้นเมือง เผ่า Wampa-naug มาร่วมรับประทานด้วยเนื่องจากว่า ชาวอินเดียนแดง เป็นผู้สอนพวกพิลกริมส์ ให้เพาะปลูกข้าวโพดและพืชผลพื้นเมืองอื่นๆ ไว้เป็นอาหาร
