กลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ในภาคใต้ของประเทศฟิลิปปินส์

ภาคใต้ของฟิลิปปินส์นั้นมีสภาพปัญหาทาง การเมืองที่คล้ายคลึงกับจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ เกาะมินดาเนาและหมู่เกาะซูลูมีความสัมพันธ์ทางวัฒนธรรม ประวัติศาสตร์กับประเทศบรูไน มาเลเซีย และอินโดเนเซีย พื้นที่ภาคใต้ฟิลิปปินส์นั้นในอดีตมีการใช้ระบบสุลต่าน บรรดารัฐที่มีสุลต่านเป็นผู้ปกครองนั้นมีหลายรัฐ เช่น รัฐซูลู รัฐมากินดาเนา รัฐบัวยัน เป็นต้น

ในบริเวณภาคใต้ของประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ โดยเฉพาะเกาะมินดาเนา มีประชากรหลากหลายกลุ่มชนเผ่า นักวิชาการได้แบ่งกลุ่มชนในบริเวณดังกล่าวออกเป็น 3 กลุ่ม คือ

1.กลุ่มชาวฟิลิปปินส์คริสต์ ซึ่งก็มีหลากหลายชนเผ่าด้วยกัน
2.กลุ่มชาวมุสลิมในภาคใต้ของฟิลิปปินส์ประกอบไปด้วยหลากหลายชนเผ่า ที่ใช้ชื่อเรียกรวมกันว่า ชาวโมโร (Moro)
3.กลุ่มชนพื้นเมืองที่มีหลากหลายชนเผ่า เรียกรวมกันว่า Lumad

การ ที่ภาคใต้ของฟิลิปปินส์ประกอบด้วย 3 กล่มใหญ่ ๆ และแต่ละกลุ่มนั้นยังแบ่งออกเป็นชนเผ่าต่างๆ ทำให้พื้นที่ภาคใต้ฟิลิปปินส์มีความหลากหลายทางชนเผ่า มีความหลากหลายทางภาษา มีการสำรวจกลุ่มชนเผ่าที่ใช้ภาษาต่างๆในภาคใต้ฟิลิปปินส์

กลุ่มชนพื้นเมือง Lumad
มาจากคำเต็มว่า Katawhang Lumad ซึ่งแปลว่า คนพื้นเมืองดั้งเดิม คำนี้ใช้มาตั้งแต่ 20 กว่าปีที่ผ่านมา เป็นการใช้เมื่อครั้งที่มีการประชุมของคนพื้นเมืองดั้งเดิม ซึ่งจัดโดย The Lumad Mindanaw People Federation (LMPF) เมื่อ 26 มิถุนายน 1983 โดยให้คำนิยามของคำว่า Lumad หมายถึงคนพื้นเมืองเกาะมินดาเนาที่ไม่ใช่ชาวมุสลิมหรือชาวคริสต์
