ประวัติความเป็นมา
ฟอสซิลไดโนเสาร์ชิ้นแรกของไทยพบที่อำเภอภูเวียง จังหวัดขอนแก่น ในปี 2519 โดยนายสุธรรม แย้มนิยม อดีตนักธรณีวิทยาของกรมทรัพยากรธรณี ขณะสำรวจแร่ยูเรเนียม ในหมวดหินเสาขัว ที่อุทยานแห่งชาติภูเวียง บริเวณห้วยประตูตีหมา กระดูกชิ้นนี้มีความกว้างยาวประมาณ 1 ฟุต จากการเปรียบเทียบพบว่ามีลักษณะใกล้เคียงกับไดโนเสาร์ซอโรพอด ซึ่งมีขนาดใหญ่ยาวประมาณ 15 เมตร และจากการตรวจสอบพบว่าเป็นส่วนปลายล่างสุดของกระดูกต้นขาของไดโนเสาร์จำพวกกินพืช การสำรวจไดโนเสาร์ที่ภูเวียงได้เริ่มต้นอย่างจริงจังในปี 2524 โดยนายเชิงชาย ไกรคง นักธรณีวิทยาจากกรมทรัพยากรธรณี ได้พาคณะสำรวจโบราณชีววิทยาไทย และฝรั่งเศสขึ้นไปสำรวจกระดูกไดโนเสาร์บริเวณยอดห้วยประตูตีหมา อำเภอภูเวียงคณะสำรวจพบกระดูกไดโนเสาร์ชนิดกินพืชขนาดใหญ่ รวมทั้งฟันจระเข้ กระดองเต่า ฟันและเกล็ดปลาโบราณ และจากการสำรวจในเวลาต่อมาได้พบกระดูกไดโนเสาร์อีกหลายชนิด ศูนย์ศึกษาวิจัยและพิพิธภัณฑ์ไดโนเสาร์ภูเวียงจัดตั้งขึ้น โดยความร่วมมือของกรมทรัพยากรธรณี การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย และจังหวัดขอนแก่น เพื่อเป็นแหล่งศึกษาค้นคว้าของนักวิชาการ สำหรับให้การศึกษาแก่เยาวชน และเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวของจังหวัดขอนแก่น


แหล่งขุดค้นพบซากฟอสซิลไดโนเสาร์ ภายหลังจากการค้นพบซากฟอสซิลไดโนเสาร์ชิ้นแรกแล้ว ต่อมาได้มีการขุดค้นพบซากฟอสซิลรวมถึงรอยเท้าไดโนเสาร์ รวม 9 หลุม ดังนี้
หลุมที่ 1 (ประตูตีหมา)
พบกระดูกไดโนเสาร์ขนาดใหญ่จำนวนมากเรียงรายอยู่ในชั้นหิน

หลุมที่ 2 (ถ้ำเจีย)
พบกระดูกส่วนคอของไดโนเสาร์ซอโรพอดเรียงต่อกัน จำนวน 6 ชิ้น

หลุมที่ 3 (ห้วยประตูตีหมา)
พบกระดูกสันหลัง กระดูกซี่โครงหลายชิ้น ของไดโนเสาร์กินพืชขนาดใหญ่

หลุมที่ 4 (โนนสาวเอ้)
พบฟอสซิลกระจายเป็นบริเวณกว้างกว่า 10 ตารางเมตร ประกอบด้วยกระดูกไดโนเสาร์ซอโรพอดขนาดใหญ่ และที่อยู่ในวัยเยาว์ นอกจากนั้นยังพบเกล็ดปลาเลปิโดเทสและกระดองเต่า

หลุมที่ 5 (ซำหญ้าคา) หลุมที่ 6 (ดงเค็ง) และหลุมที่ 7 (ภูน้อย)
พบไดโนเสาร์ทั้งขนาดใหญ่และที่ยังเยาว์ และยังพบฟอสซิลของจระเข้ขนาดเล็กอีกด้วย

หลุมที่ 8 (หินลาดป่าชาด)
พบรอยเท้าไดโนเสาร์ มากกว่า 60 รอยใน 10 แนวทางเดิน เป็นของไดโนเสาร์พวกกินเนื้อขนาดเล็ก ซึ่งเดินด้วย 2 ขาหลัง

หลุมที่ 9 (หินลาดยาว)

ศูนย์ศึกษาวิจัยแลพิพิธภัณฑ์ไดโนเสาร์ภูเวียง ตั้งอยู่ใกล้อุทยานแห่งชาติภูเวียง อำเภอภูเวียง จังหวัดขอนแก่น โดยอยู่ห่างจากตัวจังหวัดขอนแก่นไปทางทิศตะวันตกเป็นระยะทางประมาณ 87 กิโลเมตร การเข้าถึงพื้นที่ใช้เส้นทางหลวงหมายเลข 12 ซึ่งเป็นถนนสายยาว ติดต่อจากจังหวัดตากทางด้านทิศตะวันตกผ่านจังหวัดสุโขทัย พิษณุโลก อำเภอหล่มสัก อำเภอชุมแพไปสิ้นสุดที่จังหวัดขอนแก่น โดยหากเริ่มจากจังหวัดขอนแก่นให้ใช้เส้นทางไปชุมแพ และแยกขวาเข้าอำเภอภูเวียง ตามเส้นทางหลวงสาย 2038 ซึ่งปากทางเข้าอยู่เลยอำเภอหนองเรือไปเล็กน้อย หรือหากเริ่มต้นจากอำเภอชุมแพให้ไปทางขอนแก่นแล้วเลี้ยวซ้ายเข้าเส้นทางหลวงสาย 2038 เช่นเดียวกัน เมื่อเลยอำเภอภูเวียงเล็กน้อยให้ใช้เส้นทางตรงไปอุทยานแห่งชาติภูเวียง ศูนย์ศึกษาวิจัยฯ ก่อนถึงอุทยานฯ ประมาณ 3 กิโลเมตร
