เมื่อเอ่ยถึงวัดร่องขุ่นวันนี้ก็จะต้องนึกถึงชื่อของ อาจารย์เฉลิมชัย โฆษิตพิพัฒน์ ชายผู้บอกกับทุกคนว่าเขาคือช่างเขียนรูปธรรมดา ทั้งที่ความจริงแล้วหากจะนับชื่อศิลปินไทยที่เรารู้จัก แน่นอนว่า “เฉลิมชัย โฆษิตพิพัฒน์” เป็นศิลปินในลำดับต้นๆที่ถูกนึกถึงเป็นชื่อแรกๆ เขาเป็น 1 ใน 3 ของศิลปินสายจิตรกรรมในประเทศไทย ที่ผลงานของเขาอยู่ในแกลเลอรี่ส่วนตัวของเศรษฐี นักธุรกิจชั้นนำหลายคน เป็นหนึ่งในจิตรกรเอกที่เขียนภาพประกอบบทพระราชนิพนธ์ พระมหาชนก เฉลิมชัยผู้สร้างสรรค์งานจิตรกรรมในแนวพุทธศิลปได้อย่างสวยงามเป็นเลิศ
อาจารย์เฉลิมชัย โฆษิตพิพัฒน์ มีความคิดสร้างโบสถ์ถวายวัดร่องขุ่น ที่คนรุ่นพ่อเคยร่วมกันสร้างไว้ ซึ่งตอนนั้นมีสภาพทรุดโทรมเป็นที่สุด จากเดิมที่คิดจะสร้างแค่โบสถ์ 1 หลังด้วยศิลปะสมัยใหม่ เหมาะกับประเทศไทยภายใต้ร่มโพธิสมภารของในหลวง รัชกาลที่ 9 เริ่มลงมือสร้างเมื่อปี 2540 ด้วยทุนทรัพย์ส่วนตัว แต่เมื่อผลงานเริ่มปรากฏก็มีผู้ใจบุญร่วมสนับสนุน จนกลายเป็นการสร้างใหม่ทั้งวัด จากโบสถ์ 1 หลังเพิ่มเป็น 9 หลัง ได้รับบริจาคที่ดินจาก คุณวันชัย วิชญชาคร จนมีเนื้อที่เป็น 9 ไร่
วัดร่องขุ่น อยู่ที่บ้านร่องขุ่น กม.ที่ 817-818 ตำบลป่าอ้อดอนชัย อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดเชียงราย อาจารเฉลิมชัยได้ออกแบบเอง และดูแลการก่อสร้างเองทั้งหมด เป็นสิ่งปลูกสร้างที่ถ่ายทอดงานจิตรกรรมลงสู่งานสถาปัตยกรรมได้อย่างน่าทึ่ง พระอุโบสถที่สวยเด่นตกแต่งด้วยสีขาวเป็นพื้น ประดับด้วยกระจกบนปูนปั้นเป็นลายไทย โดยเฉพาะเหนืออุโบสถที่ประดับด้วยสัตว์ในเทพนิยายตามจินตนาการ เป็นรูปกึ่งช้างกึ่งวิหคเชิดงวงชูงา ดูงดงามแปลกตาน่าสนใจมากภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังภายในพระอุโบสถก็เป็นฝีมือภาพเขียนของอาจารย์เอง
อาจารย์เฉลิมชัยเล่าไว้ในหนังสือ ไม่ธรรมดา ว่า ผมปรารถนาอยากจะสร้างวัดให้เหมือนเมืองสวรรค์ เป็นวิมานบนดินที่มนุษย์โลกสามารถสัมผัสได้ ผม สร้างโบสถ์ในเขตพุทธวาส เปรียบเหมือนบ้านของพระพุทธเจ้า สีขาวแทนพระบริสุทธิ์คุณของพระเจ้า กระจกขาว หมายถึงพระปัญญาคุณของพระพุทธเจ้าที่แปล่งประกายไปทั่วโลกมนุษย์และจักรวาล สะพานหมายถึง การเดินข้ามวัฏสงสารมุ่งสู่พุทธภูมิ ก่อนขึ้นสะพานครึ่งวงกลมเล็กหมายถึง โลกมนุษย์ วงใหญ่ที่มีเขี้ยวเป็นปากของพญามาร หรือพระราหูหมายถึง กิเลสในใจแทนขุมนรกคือทุกข์ ผู้ใดจะเข้าเฝ้าพระพุทธเจ้าในพุทธภูมิต้องตั้งจิตปลดปล่อยกิเลสตัณหาของตน เองทิ้งลงไปในปากพญามาร เพื่อเป็นการชำระจิตเราให้ผ่องใสถึงจะเดินผ่านขึ้นไป บนเส้นของสะพานจะประกอบไปด้วยอสูรรวมมกัน 16 ตัว ข้างละ 8 ตัว หมายถึง อุปกิเลส 16 จากนั้นก็จะถึงกึ่งกลางสะพาน หมายถึงเขาพระสุเมรุ เป็นที่อยู่ของเทวดา ด้านล่างเป็นสระน้ำ หมายถึงสีทันดรมหาสมุทร มีสวรรค์ตั้งอยู่ 6 ชั้น แทนด้วยดอกบัวทิพย์ 16 ดอกรอบอุโบสถ ดอกที่ใหญ่สุด 4 ดอก ตรงทางขึ้นด้านข้างโบสถ์ หมายถึงซุ้มพระอริยเจ้า 4 พระองค์ ประกอบด้วยพระโสดาบัน พระสกิทาคามี พระนาคามี และพระอรหันต์ เป็นสงฆ์สาวกที่เราควรกราบไหว้บูชาก่อนขึ้นบันไดครึ่งวงกลม หมายถึง โลกกุตตรปัญญา บันไดทางขึ้น 3 ขั้น แทน อนิจจัง ทุกขัง อนัตตา ผ่านแล้วจึงไปสู่แผ่นดินของอรูปพรหม 4 แทนด้วยดอกบัวทิพย์ 4 ดอก และบานประตู 4 บาน บานสุดท้ายเป็นกระจกสามเหลี่ยมแทนความว่าง (ความหลุดพ้น) แล้วจึงจะก้าวข้ามธรณีประตูเข้าสู่พุทธภูมิ
