ท่านเดินทางมายังเมืองไทยเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี ๒๕๐๙ เพราะมีความสนใจในพุทธศาสนาตั้งแต่อยู่ที่ประเทศมาเลเซีย เมื่อได้บำเพ็ญกรรมฐานที่วัดมหาธาตุ ฯ ท่าพระจันทร์ ก็มีความสนใจอยากบวชพระ ท่านเริ่มต้นชีวิตบรรพชิตด้วยการเป็นสามเณรโดยมีพระราชปรีชาญาณมุนีเจ้าคณะจังหวัดหนองคายเป็นอุปัชฌาย์ .หลังจากที่ได้ทำกรรมฐานอย่างเข้มข้นอย่างลำพังในกุฏิเป็นเวลาหนึ่งปี ท่านตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของการมีครูบาอาจารย์เพื่อแนะนำการปฏิบัติให้ถูกทาง จึงเริ่มแสวงหาอาจารย์กรรมฐานที่พึ่งพาได้
ระหว่างอยู่ที่ประเทศลาวเพื่อต่อวีซ่าเข้าเมืองไทย ท่านได้พบพระไทยรูปหนึ่ง ชื่อพระสมหมาย มีกิริยาน่าเลื่อมใส พระสมหมายได้พรรณนาถึงอาจารย์ของท่านที่จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี สามเณรสุเมโธฟังแล้วก็เกิดความสนใจอยากไปศึกษาปฏิบัติกับท่าน อาจารย์รูปนั้นคือหลวงพ่อชา สุภัทโท แห่งวัดหนองป่าพง เมื่อคิดว่าพบอาจารย์แล้ว ท่านได้ตัดสินใจบวชพระ โดยกลับไปอุปสมบทที่หนองคาย มีพระราชปรีชาญาณมุนีเป็นอุปัชฌาย์เช่นเคย.
พระสมหมายเป็นทั้งผู้แนะนำและผู้พาพระสุเมโธไปกราบหลวงพ่อชาเป็นครั้งแรก ท่านจึงรู้สึกเป็นหนี้บุญคุณพระสมหมาย แต่เมื่ออยู่ด้วยกันได้ไม่นาน ท่านก็เริ่มมีปัญหากับพระรูปนี้ ทั้งนี้เพราะพระสมหมายป็นผู้ที่เคร่งครัดในพระวินัยมาก แต่ด้วยความยึดติดถือมั่นในพระวินัย ท่านจึงจู้จี้ขี้บ่นและเพ่งโทษจับผิดผู้อื่นเป็นประจำ พระสุเมโธจึงรู้สึกหงุดหงิดรำคาญใจมาก

หลังจากเกิดเหตุการณ์ดังกล่าว หลวงพ่อชาได้แนะให้พระอาจารย์สุเมโธอุทิศส่วนกุศลจากการปฏิบัติให้แก่ทิดสมหมาย ท่านได้น้อมรับและยินดีปฏิบัติตามจวบจนทุกวันนี้
พระอาจารย์สุเมโธเคยกล่าวถึงเรื่องนี้ว่า “เพราะอาจารย์สมหมายพาเรามาพบหลวงพ่อชา จึงทำให้มีพระสุเมโธในปัจจุบัน....อาจารย์สมหมายจึงมีบุญคุณกับเรา มีคุณต่อพระพุทธศาสนา ส่วนอาจารย์สมหมายจะสึกแล้วไปติดเหล้า นั่นเป็นเรื่องของท่าน แต่เป็นหน้าที่ของพระสุเมโธที่ควรแสดงความกตัญญูกตเวที”

ความดีนั้นหากยึดมั่นถือมั่นหรือ “ติดดี”เมื่อใด ก็อาจทำให้เกิดความโกรธเกลียดผู้ที่ไม่ดีเหมือนตน หรือไม่ดีอย่างที่ตนคาดหวังก็ได้ แต่หลวงพ่อชานั้น ท่านทำดีโดยไม่ติดดี จึงสามารถคงความดีและมีความดีให้แม้กระทั่งผู้ที่พลัดตกจากความดีหรือผิดศีล
