ซึ่งเป็นปริมาณที่มาก และอีกประมาณ 40 ปี ต่อไป (ปี พ.ศ. 2585) คาดว่าน้ำมันปิโตรเลียมจะหมดไปจากโลกในขณะที่อัตราการใช้เชื้อเพลิงและ พลังงานของโลกมีแนวโน้มสูงขึ้นทุกปี การแสวงหาแหล่งเชื้อเพลิงและพลังงานจากทรัพยากรแหล่งใหม่ที่มีอยู่ เพื่อทดแทนน้ำมันปิโตรเลียมจึงเป็นสิ่งสำคัญที่จะต้องเร่งดำเนินการโดยด่วน ปัจจุบันได้มีการศึกษาถึงการนำเอาพลังงานทดแทนมาใช้ในรูปแบบต่าง ๆ กัน ซึ่งพลังงานทดแทนหนึ่งที่น่าสนใจและมีความเป็นไปได้คือการผลิตเชื้อเพลิงจาก ผลิตผลทางการเกษตร โดยการนำเอาผลผลิตทางการเกษตรที่มีอยู่แล้ว มาแปรรูปเป็นน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิง อาทิ การผลิตเอทานอล (Ethanol) จากมันสำปะหลัง อ้อย หรือธัญพืชอื่นๆ เพื่อนำไปผสมกับน้ำมันเบนซิน หรือดีเซล เพื่อใช้เป็นเชื้อเพลิงทดแทนโดยตรงก็ได้ การผลิตน้ำมันดีเซลชีวภาพ (Bio Diesel) จากน้ำมันพืช อาทิ น้ำมันปาล์ม น้ำมันละหุ่ง น้ำมันมะพร้าว และน้ำมันถั่วเหลือง ซึ่งได้มีผลการวิจัยและการใช้งานมาแล้วในหลายประเทศ นอกจากนี้การใช้เชื้อเพลิงจากผลผลิตทางการเกษตร ทดแทนน้ำมันปิโตรเลียม ยังช่วยลดมลภาวะที่เกิดขึ้นด้วย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งผลกระทบจากสภาวะเรือนกระจก (Green House Effect)
