เดิมชื่อว่า วัดหงษ์ สร้างในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาตอนปลายเป็นที่ประดิษฐาน หลวงพ่อโสธร ซึ่งมีประวัติเล่าว่าหลวงพ่อพุทธโสธรได้ลอยน้ำมา และมีผู้อัญเชิญขึ้นมาประดิษฐานที่วัดแห่งนี้
