​จนกระทั่ง พลเอกสนธิ บุญยรัตกลิน ได้ทำกรปฏิวัติและ ก้าวขึ้นสู่อำนาจ และเข้ามามีบทบาททางการเมือง ส่งผลให้ไทยอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของรัฐบาลทหาร ซึ่งมีพลเอกสุรยุทธ์ จุลานนท์เป็นนายกรัฐมนตรี ระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2549-2550 ช่วงนั้นการปกครองไทยอยู่ในรูปแบบการปกครองโดยทหาร ผู้ชุมนุมเสื้อเหลืองก็ได้สลายการชุมนุมไป ต่อมาได้มีการรวมตัวอีกครั้งจากกลุ่ม นปช.แนวร่วมประชาธิปไตยต่อต้านเผด็จการแห่งชาติ โดยรวมกลุ่มเคลื่อนไหวทางการเมือง เพื่อต่อต้านรัฐประหาร พ.ศ. 2549 และขับไล่คณะมนตรีความมั่นคงแห่งชาติ กับ พล.อ. สุรยุทธ์ จุลานนท์ ออกจากการเป็นนายกรัฐมนตรี แต่ยุติการชุมนุมเมื่อ 26 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2550 หลังจากที่พรรคพลังประชาชนได้รับเลือกตั้งเป็นเสียงข้างมากในสภาผู้แทนราษฎร โดยในภายหลังได้กลับมารวมตัวกันอีก เพื่อต่อต้านพันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตย ในเดือนพฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2551 จนเกิดเหตุการณ์ปะทะกัน โดยมีผู้เสียชีวิตและบาดเจ็บ แต่หลังจากนั้นได้มีการแต่งตั้งนายอภิสิทธิ์ เวชชาชีวะ หัวพรรคประชาธิปปัตย์ ขึ้นมาเป็นนายกรัฐมนตรี โดยมีวาระการทำงาน1ปี ซึ่งการแต่งตั้งครั้งนั้นทำให้กลุ่มนปช.ลุกขึ้นมาประท้วงคล้ายๆกับเหตุการณ์ของกลุ่มพันธมิตร เป็นกลุ่มเคลื่อนไหวทางการเมืองในประเทศไทย ซึ่งมีความเกี่ยวข้องกับ พ.ต.ท. ทักษิณ ชินวัตร อดีตนายกรัฐมนตรี และเป็นองค์กรหลักของกลุ่มคนเสื้อแดง โดยมีสัญลักษณ์หลักคือ สีแดง และเสื้อสีแดง นปช.กลับมาชุมนุมเคลื่อนไหวครั้งใหญ่เพื่อขับไล่รัฐบาล ในวันที่ 26 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2552 จนเกิดเหตุการณ์ความไม่สงบเมื่อ เมษายน พ.ศ. 2552 รัฐบาลประกาศสถานการณ์ฉุกเฉินขั้นร้ายแรง และยกกำลังทหารปิดล้อมผู้ชุมนุม ทั้งสองเหตุการณ์ที่ผ่านมานั้นยังคงทำให้การเมืองไทยวุ่นวายและยังต้องพึ่งอำนาจของทหารเข้ามาจัดการความเรียบร้อยต่างๆอีกครั้ง โดยรวมคือไทยมีกลุ่มที่เคลื่อนไหวทางการเมืองสองกลุ่มใหญ่คือกลุ่มพันธมิตร (เสื้อเหลือง) และกลุ่มนปช.
