ภายหลังจากที่สมาคมยิงปืนสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทยในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ได้ก่อตั้งขึ้นแล้ว สมาคมฯจึงได้คัดเลือกนักกีฬายิงปืนส่งเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันกับนานาชาติ เช่น การแข่งขันซีเกมส์ เอเชียนเกมส์ และโอลิมปิกเกมส์เป็นครั้งแรกในการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิก ครั้งที่ 17 ณ กรุงโรม ประเทศอิตาลี ในปี พ.ศ. 2503

ในปี พ.ศ. 2501 สมาคมยิงปืนสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย จึงได้สมัครเข้าเป็นสมาชิกของสหพันธ์ยิงปืนแห่งเอเชีย และสมาชิกของสหพันธ์ยิงปืนนานาชาติในปีเดียวกัน ซึ่งประเภทการแข่งขันยิงปืนตามแบบสหพันธ์ยิงปืนนานาชาติ ซึ่งจัดการแข่งขันในกีฬาโอลิมปิกมี 7 ประเภท คือ
