ยาอีเป็นสารสังเคราะห์ ที่ออกฤทธิ์ทั้งกระตุ้นประสาท (amphetamine - like) และหลอนประสาท (LSD - like) ยาอี/ยาเลิฟจึงถือว่าเป็นลูกพี่ลูกน้องของยาไอซ์/ยาบ้าปัจจุบันยาอี/ยาเลิฟเป็นยาเสพติดที่กำลังแพร่หลายในกลุ่มวัยรุ่น สาเหตุหลักน่าจะมาจากความเข้าใจผิดที่ว่าเป็นยาที่ให้โทษต่อร่างกายน้อยกว่ายาไอซ์/ยาบ้ายาอี (Ecstasy) มีชื่อทางวิทยาศาสตร์ คือ 3,4 methylenedioxy methamphetamine หรือ MDMA ส่วนยาเลิฟ มีชื่อทางวิทยาศาสตร์ คือ 3,4-Methylenedioxy amphetamine หรือ MDA ซึ่งมีสูตรโครงสร้างคล้ายกับ เมทแอมเฟตามีน หรือ ยาบ้า (Methamphetamine/Amphetamine)
แต่มีฤทธิ์ที่รุนแรงกว่าประมาณ 10 เท่า โดยออกฤทธิ์กระตุ้นประสาท และ ทำลายเซลล์สมองที่เกี่ยวข้องกับความคิดและความจำเช่นเดียวกัน
