ฝ่ายวิจัยและพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีคอมพิวเตอร์เพื่อการคำนวณ ภายใต้ศูนย์เทคโนโลยีอิเล็กทรอนิกส์และคอมพิวเตอร์แห่งชาติ สำนักงานพัฒนาวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีแห่งชาติ กระทรวงวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี มีเป้าหมายหรือภารกิจหลักในการวิจัยและพัฒนา "คลังข้อมูลและการจัดการความรู้ (Data Warehouse and Knowledge Management)" โดยเน้นความสำคัญไปที่งานวิจัยและพัฒนา ที่ใช้การคำนวณสมรรถนะสูง ในการกลั่นกรองและประมวลผลข้อมูล ให้เกิดเป็นความรู้ที่สามารถนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ประโยชน์ได้จริงในการพัฒนาประเทศ โดยตั้งอยู่บนสมดุลของการทำงานแบบสหสาขาวิชา (Multi-disciplinary) เพื่อก้าวไปสู่ขีดความสามารถในการแก้ปัญหาและสรรสร้างความรู้แบบองค์รวม

ศูนย์ฯ ได้ให้ความสำคัญต่องานวิจัยและพัฒนาในด้านนี้มาตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2538 โดยจัดตั้งหน่วยปฏิบัติการวิจัยและพัฒนาคอมพิวเตอร์สมรรถนะสูง (High Performance Computing Center) ปัจจุบันเป็นฝ่ายวิจัยและพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีคอมพิวเตอร์เพื่อการคำนวณ (Computing Research and Development Division) มีบุคลากรที่ดำเนินการอยู่ในปี พ.ศ. 2548 จำนวน 32 คน มีเป้าหมายหลักใน 2 กลุ่มเทคโนโลยี คือ

เทคโนโลยีคลังข้อมูลสำหรับการบริหารจัดการข้อมูลและองค์ความรู้ (Information Management) มีเป้าหมายในการพัฒนาขีดความสามารถในการแลกเปลี่ยน และบูรณาการข้อมูล (Information Sharing and Integration) บนฐานของการพัฒนาระบบข้อมูลด้วยซอฟต์แวร์รหัสเปิดและมาตรฐานเปิด (Open source and open standard)
เทคโนโลยีการคำนวณ (Computing Science) มีเป้าหมายในการพัฒนาขีดความสามารถในการประยุกต์ใช้งาน และแก้ปัญหาทางวิทยาศาสตร์ วิศวกรรม บนฐานของการสร้างทรัพยากรและโครงสร้างพื้นฐานเพื่อการคำนวณสมรรถนะสูง (High Performance Computing) และวิทยาการเชิงคอมพิวเตอร์ (Computational Science)
