          แผ่นดินไหว เป็นภัยพิบัติทางธรรมชาติที่เกิดจากการสั่นสะเทือนของพื้นดิน อันเนื่องมาจากการปลดปล่อยพลังงานเพื่อลดความเครียดที่สะสมไว้ภายในโลกออกมาเพื่อปรับสมดุลของเปลือกโลกให้คงที่ ปัจจุบันนักวิทยาศาสตร์ยังไม่สามารถทำนายเวลา สถานที่ และความรุนแรงของแผ่นดินไหวที่จะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตได้ ดังนั้นจึงควรศึกษา เรียนรู้ เพื่อให้เข้าใจถึงกระบวนการเกิดของแผ่นดินไหวที่แท้จริง เพื่อเป็นแนวทางในการลดความเสียหายที่เกิดขึ้น
 
         สาเหตุของการเกิดแผ่นดินไหว

         ทฤษฎีว่าด้วยการขยายตัวของเปลือกโลก โดยแผ่นดินไหวเกิดจากการที่เปลือกโลกเกิดการคดโค้ง โก่งตัวอย่างฉับพลัน และเมื่อวัตถุขาดออกจากกันจึงปลดปล่อยพลังงานออกมาในรูปคลื่นแผ่นดินไหว
 
         ทฤษฎีว่าด้วยการคืนตัวของวัตถุ โดยแผ่นดินไหวมาจากการเคลื่อนตัวของรอยเลื่อน กล่าวคือ เมื่อรอยเลื่อนเกิดการเคลื่อนตัวถึงจุดหนึ่งวัตถุจะขาดออกจากกันและเสียรูปอย่างมาก พร้อมทั้งปลดปล่อยพลังงานมหาศาลออกมาในรูปของคลื่นแผ่นดินไหว และหลังจากนั้นวัตถุจะคืนตัวกลับสู่รูปเดิม
