พอถึงวันขึ้น ๑๓ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ ตั้งแต่ตอนเย็นชาวอำเภอเมืองสมุทรปราการ ชาวพระประแดง และชาวต่างถิ่นจะชักชวนพวกพ้องเพื่อนฝูงลงเรือพร้อมด้วยเครื่องดนตรีนานาชนิดเช่น ซอ ปี่ กระจับ โทน รำมะนาโหม่ง กรับ ฉิ่ง ฉาบ เป็นต้น พายกันไปร้องรำทำเพลงกันไปตลอดทาง ตลอดคืน ซึ่งบางพวกจะผ่านมาทางลำน้ำเจ้าพระยา บางพวกจะผ่านมาทางลำคลองอื่นๆเข้าคลองสำโรงและมุ่งหน้ามายังหมู่บ้านบางพลีใหญ่ สำหรับชาวบางพลีนั้นจะถือปฏิบัติกันเป็นประเพณีว่าเมื่อถึงวันขึ้น ๑๓ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ ก็จะต้องเตรียมหาดอกบัวหลวง สำหรับมอบให้แก่ชาวบ้านที่ต้องการและมิตรต่างถิ่นมาเยือนในโอกาสเช่นนี้ ก็คงแสดงมิตรจิตออกต้อนรับ จัดหาสุราอาหารมาเลี้ยงดูกันตั้งแต่ตอนค่ำของวันขึ้น ๑๓ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ ส่วนพวกที่มารับบัวคนใดรู้จักมักคุ้นกับชาวบางพลีผู้เป็นเจ้าของบ้าน ก็จะพาขึ้นไปเยี่ยมเยือนบ้านนั้นบ้านนี้ และต่างก็สนุกสนานร้องรำทำเพลงและร่วมรับประทานอาหารสุรากันตลอดคืน พอเช้าตรู่ของวันขึ้น ๑๔ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ ชาวบ้านต่างก็นำเรือของตนออกไปตามลำคลองสำโรงเพื่อไปขอรับบัวจากชาวบ้านบางพลีทั้งสองฝั่งคลอง การให้และการรับดอกบัวก็จะทำกันอย่างสุภาพ คือส่งและรับกันมือต่อมือ หรือก่อนให้จะยกมือพนมอธิษฐาน เสียก่อนระหว่างชาวบ้านบางพลีกับชาวต่างถิ่นที่สนิทสนมคุ้นเคยกันป็นพิเศษ บางทีชาวบางพลีก็จะโยนดอกบัวลงไปให้กันโดยไม่มีพิธีรีตอง เหตุที่มีการโยนบัวให้กัน แบบมือต่อมือจึงเลือนไปจนมีการนำไปพูดกันตอนหลังว่า รับบัว โยนบัว การรับดอกบัวของชาวต่างบ้านจากชาวบางพลีจะสิ้นสุดเมื่อเวลาประมาณ ๐๘.๐๐ น. หรือ ๐๙.๐๐ น. และชาวบ้านก็จะพากันกลับ ตอนขากลับจะมีการแข่งเรือกันไปด้วยแต่เป็นการแข่งขันโดยมีเส้นชัยไม่มีกรรมการตัดสินและไม่มีการแบ่งประเภทหรือชนิดของเรือ ใครพอใจจะแข่งกับใครเมื่อไหร่ที่ใดก็แข่งกันไปหรือจะเปลี่ยนคู่เปลี่ยนคู่แข่งกันไปเรื่อยๆตามแต่จะตกลงกัน ดอกบัวที่ชาวต่างถิ่นรับจากชาวบางพลีไปนั้นจะนำไปบูชาในเทศกาลออกพรรษาตามวัดในหมู่บ้านของตนประเพณีที่กล่าวมาแล้วข้างต้น ครั้นนานมาชาวต่างถิ่นที่นำเรือมารับดอกบัวจากชาวบางพลีมีปริมาณลดลงเรื่อยๆ เสียงกระจับ ปี่ สีซอ กลองรำมะนา เสียงเพลงเสียงเฮฮาที่เคยเซ็งแซ่ตามลำคลองสำโรงในคืนวันขึ้น ๑๓ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ ก็ค่อยๆเงียบหายไป ต่อมาสมัยนายชื้น วรศิริ (เพชรบูรณะ วรศิริ) เป็นนายอำเภอบางพลี ระหว่าง พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๓-๒๔๘๑ ประเพณีรับบัวมีทีท่าว่าจะเสื่อมสูญไปนั้น ได้กลับมาฟื้นตัวอีกครั้ง เมื่อได้หารือกับพ่อค้าคหบดีตลอดจนข้าราชการเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้ว ทางอำเภอบางพลีจึงได้ตกลงกันดำเนินการจัดงานประเพณีรับบัวขึ้นคือ เริ่มงานวันขึ้น ๑๓ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ และรุ่งขึ้น ๑๔ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ เป็นวันรับบัวอันเป็นครั้งแรกที่ทางราชการเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้องกับประเพณีรับบัวของชาวบางพลี ในการจัดงานประเพณีรับบัวของทางราชการอำเภอบางพลี มีการแต่งเรือประกวด เริ่มมีมาเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๐ (แต่ก่อนชาวต่างถิ่นจะตกแต่งเรือมาเพียงเพื่อความสวยงามแต่ไม่มีการประกวด) ผู้ใหญ่บ้าน กำนัน ช่วยกันหาดอกบัวแจกข้าวต้มมัดแก่แขกต่างบ้านและผู้จัดเรือประกวดในวันขึ้น ๑๓ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ ประชาชนต่างถิ่นและชาวอำเภอบางพลีจะลงเรือล่องไปตามลำคลองสำโรง ร้องรำทำเพลงกันอย่างสนุกสนานร่วมกัน ชาวบางพลีจะจัดสุราอาหารไว้ต้อนรับแขกต่างบ้าน ชาวต่างถิ่นคนใดรู้จักมักคุ้นกับชาวอำเภอบางพลีคนใดบ้านใดก็จะพากันไปเยี่ยมเยือน สนุกสนานกับชาวบางพลีบ้านนั้นจนรุ่งเช้า วันขึ้น ๑๔ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ ต่างก็จะพากันไปดูการประกวดที่คลองสำโรงหน้าที่ว่าการอำเภอบางพลี ในการจัดงานประเพณีรับบัวมีองค์ประกอบที่สำคัญคือ มีการแห่หลวงพ่อโต ซึ่งแต่เดิมยังมิได้มีการแห่ดังเช่นสมัยนี้ ในราวปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๗ นางจั่นกับพวกได้พร้อมใจกันสร้างพระปฐมเจดีย์ขึ้น ในวัดบางพลีใหญ่ใน เมื่อสร้างเสร็จแล้ว ก็จัดให้มีการฉลองโดยแห่องค์พระปฐมเจดีย์นี้ตามลำคลอง แล้วกลับมาห่มองค์พระปฐมเจดีย์กลางคืนก็จัดให้มีมหรสพสมโภช แห่ไปได้ ๒-๓ ปี ก็หยุดไปด้วยเหตุใดไม่ปรากฏ ซึ่งเชื่อว่าการแห่ผ้าห่อองค์พระปฐมเจดีย์นี้ได้รับแบบอย่างมาจากการแห่ผ้าห่มองค์พระสมุทรเจดีย์ของอำเภอเมืองสมุทรปราการ ต่อมาก็มีการแห่รูปหลวงพ่อโตแทน โดยความเห็นชอบของท่านสมภารกุ่ย และนายฉลวย งามขำ แห่รูปภาพของหลวงพ่อโตมาหลายปี จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๕ ก็มีการทำหุ่นจำลองหลวงพ่อโต สานด้วยโครงไม้ปิดกระดาษทาสีทอง แล้วนำแห่แทนรูปภาพของหลวงพ่อโต ซึ่งสร้างโดยนายไสว โตเจริญ ตกกลางคืนก็มีงานมหรสพฉลองกันอย่างครึกครื้นจนถึงสมัยพระครูพิศาลสมณวัตต์เป็นเจ้าอาวาสวัดบางพลีใหญ่ในก็ได้จัดให้ทำการหล่อรูปหลวงพ่อจำลองขึ้น สำหรับแห่ตามลำคลองด้วยอลูมิเนียมใน พ.ศ. ๒๔๙๗ และปัจจุบันแห่โดยรูปหล่อจำลองหลวงพ่อโต (รูปปั้น) โดยจัดเป็นขบวนแห่ไปตามลำคลองสำโรงในวันขึ้น ๑๓ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ เป็นการประกาศข่าวงานรับบัวให้ประชาชนทราบและวิธีนี้กลายเป็นประเพณีแห่หลวงพ่อโตก่อนวันงานรับบัว คือ วัน ๑๓ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ ตลอดจนถึงปัจจุบัน การแห่หลวงพ่อโตจึงเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของงานประเพณีรับบัว ประชาชนที่อยู่สองฝั่งคลองสำโรงที่ขบวนแห่หลวงพ่อโตผ่านจัดประดับธงทิว ตกแต่งบ้านเรือนและตั้งโต๊ะหมู่บูชา พอเช้าวันรุ่งขึ้น ๑๔ ค่ำ เดือน ๑๑ มีการประกวดเรือประเภทต่างๆของตำบลใกล้เคียงและโรงเรียนส่งเข้าประกวด ซึ่งเริ่มตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๐ มีการจัดประกวด ปัจจุบันการประกวดเรือมี ๓ ประเภทด้วยกัน คือ ประเภทสวยงาม ประเภทความคิด และประเภทขบขันหน้าที่ว่าการอำเภอบางพลี ซึ่งจะเริ่มตั้งแต่เวลา ๐๖.๐๐ น.และงานจะสิ้นสุดลงเวลา ๑๑.๐๐ น. ของวันเดียวกัน ในบางปีจัดให้มีการประกวดเทพีการแข่งเรือ หรืออย่างอื่นแล้วแต่คณะกรรมการ จัดงานรับบัวแต่ละปีจะพิจารณาเห็นสมควร ส่วนการร้องรำทำเพลงไปตามลำน้ำดูหายๆไปจนปัจจุบันไม่มีแล้ว คงเที่ยวสนุกสนานกันตามบริเวณที่จัดให้มีมหรสพเท่านั้น
