สำนักหอสมุด มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพเดิมมีชื่อเรียกว่า ห้องสมุดวิทยาลัยไทยเทคนิคเริ่มก่อตั้งขึ้นพร้อมกับการก่อตั้งวิทยาลัยไทยเทคนิคในปี พ.ศ. 2505 ต่อมาเมื่อมีการเปลี่ยนชื่อสถาบันจากวิทยาลัยไทยเทคนิค เป็นวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ ห้องสมุดจึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น แผนกห้องสมุดวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ
ปี พ.ศ. 2543 มหาวิทยาลัยได้เริ่มทำการก่อสร้างอาคารหอสมุด ณ วิทยาเขตรังสิต
ภายใต้วัตถุประสงค์ที่ต้องการให้เป็นศูนย์บริการทางเทคโนโลยีการศึกษาและพัฒนาไปสู่การให้บริการห้องสมุดอิเล็กทรอนิกส์โดยปรับเปลี่ยนห้องสมุดมาเป็นศูนย์การเรียนรู้และการค้นคว้าวิจัย.ในวันที่ 16 มกราคม ปี พ.ศ. 2545 สำนักหอสมุดกลางเริ่มเปิดให้บริการ ณ อาคารหอสมุด..
