Charlie both need a break from work. Susie has
been deeply affected by her father’s recent death and
feels a child would compensate for the emptiness in
her life. She remembers her father’s stories from his
Eastern European homeland, Slovenia, of the manwolf-vampire.
A monologue follows, the ‘Voice of the
Beast’, given by an ominous, mysterious and immortal
creature, the Beast, who explains that he is a universal
threat to mankind.
In late autumn, Susie and Charlie finally leave for a
holiday in Wales. They stay in a remote cottage at the
foot of Brynmawr Hill, near the village of Llandafydd.
The ‘Voice of the Beast’ explains that in 1899, on
Brynmawr Hill, a local farmer shot a werewolf-like
creature which was not seen again. The same creature
has now returned to Wales.
At the local pub Susie and Charlie overhear a
conversation. Local farmer, Tom Lloyd, is worried
by the macabre deaths of his sheep. Another local,
Richard, thinks it is the work of ‘The Beast of
Brynmawr’.
We hear again from the ‘Voice of the Beast’. He is
interested in Susie, knows that she has been touched
by death, and his aim is to possess her. He plans to
leave her a present, the horribly mutilated body of a
sheep, which Susie discovers, to her horror, at the door
in the dead of the night.
The next day, Susie and Charlie walk up Brynmawr
Hill. They are both disturbed by the incident of the
sheep. After walking alone, Charlie returns to find
Susie unconscious. When she comes round, she
explains that she felt strange and heard wolf-like
howls. A few days later, at night, while driving to the
village pub, Charlie swerves to avoid something in
the road. There is an accident and Charlie is injured.
Susie thinks she sees a strange animal in the trees. Tom
Lloyd comes to the rescue. More of his sheep have
been killed. Richard also appears at the scene to offer
help. We hear from the Beast again: the accident was
his doing, and with Charlie in hospital, Susie is alone
and vulnerable.
Susie receives a visit from Richard. She feels relaxed
in his company and is attracted to him. She accepts
his offer of a lift to the hospital. The next day Richard
arrives as planned but claims to have left his wallet
at his house, and drives Susie there. The once grand
house is practically derelict with little habitable space.
Susie begins to feel threatened as Richard’s manner
changes and he seems to transform before her eyes as
she falls asleep to be haunted by dreams of demonic
possession. Susie wakes up in darkness, feeling awful,
and suspects she has been drugged. She escapes from
the house but is pursued by a nightmarish animal.
Tom Lloyd happens to be out on the hillside and fires
two bullets at the creature, which flees and mutates
into human form before disappearing.
Susie is taken to Tom Lloyd’s house where she
recovers from the horrors of the night. She is
convinced that she has had a close encounter with
the supernatural. Tom Lloyd goes to find Susie’s bag
which she left at Richard’s house and he finds the
bag and a heap of overgrown rubble where the house
used to be. Susie is convinced that Richard and the
Beast of Brynmawr are one and the same. Ominously,
Tom Lloyd used silver bullets, a traditional deterrent
against werewolves. The story ends with the ‘Voice of
the Beast’, who has returned to Wales in the form of a
bird of prey. He knows that Susie is expecting a child,
and that when she sees the child through the lens of
her camera, she will realise the identity of the true
father, the Beast.
