กว่า 3 ทศวรรษที่ผ่านมา ไข่-สมชาย แก้วทอง คือเจ้าของห้องเสื้อ Kai ผู้ที่ลุกขึ้นมาทำเสื้อผ้าในเชิงธุรกิจโดยใช้นางแบบคนไทยเดินบนแคทวอล์คตามแบบฝรั่ง ครั้งนั้นแฟชั่นโชว์ชุดแรกของเขาได้แรงบันดาลใจมาจากภาพยนต์ฮอลลีวู้ดเรื่อง The Great Gatsby ซึ่งกำลังได้รับความนิยมอย่างมาก และผลจากการเดินแฟชั่นโชว์คอลเลคชั่นดังกล่าวทำให้เสื้อผ้า Kai ขายหมดเกลี้ยงในเวลาอันรวดเร็ว ส่งให้ชื่อเสียงของ ไข่-สมชาย แก้วทอง โด่งดังเป็นพลุแตก จนต้องจัดงานแฟชั่นโชว์ของตัวเองตามมาอีกหลายงาน

ไข่-สมชาย ถือเป็นคนแรกที่เปิดเส้นทางให้เกิดอาชีพนางแบบขึ้นมาอย่างเป็นทางการ เพราะเขาจะจ่ายค่าตัวให้นางแบบทุกคนที่มาเดินแบบเสื้อให้ จนเรียกได้ว่า ไข่-สมชาย คือมือปั้นนางแบบอาชีพเข้าสู่วงการแฟชั่นจำนวนมากอย่างแท้จริง

“หลังจากพี่ชายต้องไปอยู่โรงเรียนประจำที่ จ.ยะลา บ้านผมก็เหลือแค่พี่สาว 2 คน แล้วก็แม่ ซึ่งผมสนิทกับแม่มาก เมื่อก่อนที่บ้านผมจะคลุกคลีกับเรื่องของการเย็บ ปัก ถัก ร้อย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการถักเสื้อกันหนาว ถักโครเชท์ ถักผ้าคลุมไหล่ ทำให้ผมซึมซับกับเรื่องราวของงานประดิษฐ์ตั่งแต่นั้นมา และด้วยความที่ผมมีพื้นฐานด้านวาดเขียนอยู่แล้ว ก็เลยทำให้เราสนใจงานทางด้านศิลปะมากขึ้น อย่างตอนที่เรียนมัธยมที่ จังหวัดยะลา อาจารย์ที่สอนวิชาศิลปะมักจะจัดกิจกรรมบ่อย อย่างจัดให้ขี่จักรยานไปเขียนรูปนอกเมือง เราก็ได้ประสบการณ์ทางด้านการวาดรูปจากตรงนี้ด้วย”

“พอจบมัธยม ผมก็มาเรียนเพาะช่างที่กรุงเทพฯ มีโอกาศได้มาเดินแถวๆ พาหุรัดบ่อยเข้า เห็นเสื้อผ้าหลากหลายแบบก็ทำให้ชอบเข้าไปใหญ่ เลยเป็นแนวทางทำให้เราเลือกที่จะทำอาชีพตัดเสื้ออย่างไม่ต้องลังเลอะไรเลย พอจบ ปี 3 ที่เพาะช่าง ผมก็สอบเข้ามหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรได้ เรียนอยู่ที่นั้นจนกระทั้งปี 3 เราก็ค้นพบตัวเองว่าเราพร้อมที่จะทำงานแล้ว ก็เลยออกมาเปิดร้านตัวเสื้อเลย เพราะรู้ว่ามันใช่สำหรับเราแล้ว คือการที่เราเลือกจะทำอาชีพตัดเย็บเสื้อผ้ามันรู้สึกว่ามีอะไรดึงดูดเรามาตั่งแต่เด็ก จนพอเราโตอายุประมาณ 22 ปี เราก็คิดว่าปริญญาไม่มีความหมายสำหรับเราอีกต่อไป”

“การที่เราทำงานมาตั่งแต่อายุ 22 ปี แล้วไม่มีความรู้พื้นฐานด้านการตัดเย็บเสื้อผ้า และไม่เคยได้เรียนที่ไหนมาก่อน มีแต่พื้นฐานทางด้านวาดเขียนก็เปนอะไรที่ช่วยได้เยอะมากทุกอย่างที่เราเรียนมาทั้งหมดสามารถนำมาช่วยทำงานให้สายอาชีพนี้ได้ ที่ผ่านมาผมอาศัยความชอบ ความถนัด มาช่วยเป็นแรงผลักดันให้เกิดเป็นประสบการณ์ที่มีค่าสำหรับเรียนรู้ต่อไป“
