 ด้วยพระปรีชาสามารถของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ฝรั่งเศสจึงยินยอมยกเมืองตราดคืนให้กับไทยเมื่อวันที่ ๒๓ มีนาคม  พ.ศ. ๒๔๔๙ โดยแลกเปลี่ยนกับเมืองพระตะบอง เสียมราฐ และศรีโสภณ  ชาวตราดจึงถือเอาวันที่ ๒๓ มีนาคมของทุกปี เป็นวันสำคัญที่ชาวตราดและคนไทยจะได้สำนึกถึงพระมหากรุณาธิคุณขององค์พระพุทธเจ้าหลวงในการปกป้องเอกราชและอธิปไตยของไทยไว้ให้ลูกหลาน
