จากอดีตที่ผ่านมากว่า50ปี ทางราชการมีความพยายามหลายครั้งในการกำหนดให้มีสัญลักษณ์ประจำชาติไทย โดยเฉพาะการกำหนดต้นไม้ และ ดอกไม้ประจำชาติ เริ่มต้นที่กรมป่าไม้ได้ชักชวนให้ประชาชนมีความสนใจต้นราชพฤกษ์หรือคูณมาตั้งแต่ช่วงปี พ.ศ.2494โดยรัฐบาลมีมติให้ถือวันที่24มิถุนายน เป็นวันต้นไม้ประจำปีของชาติ(arbour day)มีการชักชวนให้ปลูกต้นไม้ที่มีประโยชน์ชนิดต่างๆมากมาย ในขณะเดียวกันก็ได้มีการเสนอว่า ต้นราชพฤกษ์ น่าจะถือว่าเป็นต้นไม้ประจำชาติ
