การเปลี่ยนแปลงแทนที่ของระบบนิเวศ เป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงของกลุ่มสิ่งมีชีวิตในระบบนิเวศเป็นลำดับขั้น โดยมีปัจจัยต่างๆ ทั้งทางกายภาพ และชีวภาพ จนกลายเป็นกลุ่มสิ่งมีชีวิตที่ไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอีก เรียกว่า Climax community แบ่งเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ
