เรือแคนูมีมาตั้งแต่สมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์หลายพันปี โดยชาวอินเดียนแดง ซึ่งเรือแคนูถูกสร้างขึ้นเพื่อการเดินทาง การค้าขาย การสงคราม และเพื่อการล่าสัตว์ รูปลักษณ์มีความต่างกันตามสภาพแวดล้อมถิ่นที่อยู่อาศัย เช่นเรือแคนูของชาวเมารีในประเทศนิวซีแลนด์มีความยาว 35 เมตร ใช้ฝีพายถึง 80 คน ชาวอินเดียนแดงในทวีปอเมริกาเหนือสร้างเรือแคนูจากหนังกวาง และเปลือกไม้เอิร์ซ (Birch bark) ส่วนชาวอียิปต์ทำมาจากเปลือกไม้พาพัยรัส (Papyrus reeds) ส่วนชาวโพลีนีเซียนใช้ท่อนซุงทำเรือแคนู ชาวเอสกิโมในประเทศกรีนแลนด์ได้สร้างเรือขึ้นมาชนิดหนึ่งโดยเรียกว่า คยัค มีลักษณะคล้ายเรือแคนูแต่มีฝาปิดเรือคยัคนี้ถูกค้นพบโดยนักสำรวจชาวอังกฤษที่ชื่อ Burrough ในปี ค.ศ.1556



ในเวลาต่อมาเรือแคนูเริ่มเป็นที่นิยมกันมากสำหรับนักท่องเที่ยวที่ชอบการผจญภัยกลางน้ำอันเชี่ยวกราดจึงได้มีการจัดตั้งเป็นสหพันธ์เรือแคนูนานาชาติ (International Canoe Federtion –I.C.F) ขึ้นในปี ค.ศ.1700 ได้มีการผลักดันกีฬาเรือแคนูให้เป็นกีฬาสาธิตในโอลิมปิกเกมส์เมื่อปี ค.ศ.1928 และอีก 12 ปีต่อมากีฬาเรือแคนูก็ได้บรรจุลงในการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิกอย่างถาวร ในการกีฬาจะใช้คำว่าเรือแคนูซึ่งหมายถึงทั้งเรือแคนูและคยัครวมกัน เอเชี่ยนเกมส์ครั้งที่ 13 ที่ประเทศไทยได้เป็นเจ้าในการจัดการแข่งขัน กีฬาเรือแคนูก็เป็น 1 ประเภทของกีฬาที่จัดให้มีการแข่งขันนั้นด้วย
