"หนานมดแดง" เดิมเป็นชื่อหมู่บ้านหนึ่งของ อำเภอป่าพะยอม จังหวัดพัทลุง ชื่อ "หนานมดแดง" มีที่มาคือเมื่อสมัยก่อน ตอนปลายฤดูฝนชาวบ้านจะมาหาปลา และหลังจากได้ปลามาแล้ว ก็จะนำเครื่องมือจับปลาที่มีเศษปลาติดอยู่มาเก็บไว้ที่นี่ บางส่วนก็ตกหล่น ซึ่งเป็นแหล่งอาหารอย่างดีของมดแดง จึงทำให้มีมดแดง มาทำรังบริเวณนี้จนเต็มพื้นที่
คำว่า "หนาน" เป็นภาษาท้องถิ่นภาคใต้ หมายถึง แก่ง หรือ น้ำต่างระดับ ชั้น "หนาน" ในแต่ละที่เรียกต่างกัน เช่น น้ำตกหนานสวรรค์ น้ำตกหนานปลิว แต่ทาง สงขลา สตูล ตรัง จะใช้คำว่า "โตน" ซึ่งมีความหมายเดียวกับ "หนาน" เช่น น้ำตกโตนงาช้าง น้ำตกโตนแตะ น้ำตกโตนหินลาด เป็นต้น
