เศรษฐกิจมีปัญหาเพราะว่า มีปัญหาสงครามกลางเมืองแต่ว่าพอหลังจากสาครามกลางเมือเสดสิ้นแล้วเลยทำให้เศรษฐกิจดีขึ้น ดูได้จาก GDP ที่เพิ่มขึ้นแต่ก็ยังไม่มากพอที่จะทำให้ประเทศนี้เป็นประเทศที่พัฒนา

(อันนี้เป็นของปีล่าสุดนะ)จำมีการวางแผนพัฒนาดังนี้ปัจจุบันการพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจอยู่ในแผนพัฒนา 5 ปี ฉบับที่ 2 ระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2553-2558 ภายใต้เป้าหมาย MCG โดยการให้อัตราการเจริญเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจก่อให้เกิดประโยชน์ต่อทุกภาคส่วนของประเทศ การวางเป้าหมาย MCG มีลักษณะเด่นคือการเน้นการพัฒนาทุนทางสังคม (Social Capital) โดยให้บรรลุเป้าหมายในปี พ.ศ. 2559 คล้ายกับเป้าหมายการพัฒนาแห่งสหัสวรรษ (Millennium Development Goal: MDG) ขององค์การสหประชาชาติ ด้วยการลดความยากจน ส่งเสริมการศึกษา การชลประทาน รวมทั้งการเพิ่มพื้นที่ป่าของประเทศ ขณะเดียวกันก็ให้ความสำคัญต่อการพัฒนาทางด้านเศรษฐกิจ การค้า อุตสาหกรรม การลงทุนภาคเอกชน การพัฒนาชนบท เกษตรกรรม การท่องเที่ยวและพลังงาน
