เอกสารที่นำมาอ้างจะต้องให้ข้อมูล รายละเอียดชัดเจนเพียงพอที่จะสามารถติดตามค้นหาข้อมูลที่อ้างถึงหรือเกี่ยวข้องได้ถูกต้อง

โดยทั่วไปแล้วเอกสารที่มีการนำข้อมูลมาอ้างอิงในเนื้อเรื่องของบทความหรือรายงาน จะเรียกว่าเอกสารอ้างอิง ซึ่ง ภาษาอังกฤษใช้ References, Literature Cited, หรือ Reference Cited ในปัจจุบันมักใช้คำว่า References แต่ถ้าเป็นเอกสารที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวข้องกับเรื่องที่เขียนและผู้เขียนนำมาศึกษาข้อมูลประกอบ แต่มิได้มีการนำข้อมูลมาอ้างถึงโดยตรง จะเรียกว่าบรรณานุกรม หรือ Bibliography บทความใดที่มีทั้งเอกสารอ้างอิงและบรรณานุกรม จะต้องจัดทำรายการแยกกันไว้ท้ายเรื่อง

1.2 ระบบหมายเลข (Number System) เป็นระบบที่คล้ายคลึงกับระบบนาม - ปี แต่ระบบนี้จะใช้หมายเลขแทนชื่อผู้แต่งเอกสาร ซึ่งปัจจุบันในสาขาวิทยาศาสตร์สุขภาพนิยมใช้ เช่น การอ้างอิงแบบแวนคูเวอร์
ส่วนวิธีอ้างอิง มีอยู่ 2 วิธี คือ
1.2.1 ให้หมายเลขตามลำดับของการอ้างอิง
