พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงมีพระราชประสงค์ที่จะช่วยเหลือเกษตรกรให้สามารถพึ่งตนเองได้ ทรงพระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์ ดำเนินการทางด้านการเกษตรต่างๆ เพื่อเป็นตัวอย่างและ เป็นแหล่งความรู้ ทรงทุ่มเทเพื่อการศึกษาวิจัย เพื่อการพัฒนา โดยเฉพาะการทดลองเกี่ยวกับการผลิตข้าวอย่างครบวงจร ภายในบริเวณพระตำหนักจิตรลดารโหฐาน

ในปี พ.ศ. 2504 ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้กรมการข้าว (ปัจจุบันเรียกกรมวิชาการเกษตร) ดำเนินการจัดทำแปลงนาใน บริเวณสวนจิตรลดา และนำพันธุ์ข้าวต่าง ๆ มาปลูกทดลอง เพื่อทำการศึกษา โดยในครั้งแรกทรงขับรถไถนาเตรียมแปลง หว่านข้าว และทรงเกี่ยวข้าวด้วยพระองค์เอง ปัจจุบันแปลงนาข้าวทดลอง เป็นที่ปลูกข้าวพันธุ์ดี ซึ่งส่งเสริมให้ชาวนาปลูกในภาคต่าง ๆ เมล็ดพันธุ์ข้าวที่เก็บเกี่ยวได้จากนาข้าวทดลองจะนำไปใช้ในพระราชพิธีพืชมงคลจรดพระนังคัลแรกนาขวัญ และนำไปบรรจุซองเล็ก ๆ จัดเป็น "พันธุ์ข้าวทรงปลูกพระราชทาน" แจกจ่ายให้กับพสกนิกรและเกษตรกร ทั่วประเทศ เพื่อเป็นสิริมงคลในการประกอบอาชีพ
