เมื่อวันที่ 25 กันยายน 2558 นายกรัฐมนตรีพล.อ.ประยุทธ์ ได้เข้าร่วมการประชุมสมัชชาสหประชาชาติสมัยสามัญ ครั้งที่ 70 ในหัวข้อเรื่อง “การขจัดความยากจนและลดความเหลื่อมล้ำในการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน” ท่านนายกได้กล่าวไว้ว่า “รัฐบาลไทยให้ความสำคัญกับการสร้างโอกาสในสังคมและการเข้าถึงแหล่งทรัพยากรของประเทศอย่างทัดเทียมเพราะไม่ต้องการทิ้งใครไว้ข้างหลัง ไม่ต้องการให้สังคมไทยใช้อำนาจเพื่อผลประโยชน์ของตัวเอง รัฐบาลมีความรับผิดชอบในการสร้างกรอบกติกา ที่เอื้อให้คนทุกคนในสังคมได้รับโอกาสอย่างเท่าเทียมกัน ตลอดจนต้องได้รับการคุ้มครองโดยกระบวนการยุติธรรม และหลักการสำคัญของการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืนก็คือการรักษาความสมดุลทางเศรษฐกิจ สังคม และสิ่งแวดล้อมได้อย่างเหมาะสม ซึ่งตลอด 50 ปีที่ผ่านมา ประเทศไทยสามารถยกระดับการพัฒนามาเป็นประเทศรายได้ปานกลางระดับสูงได้ ก็ด้วยการประยุกต์ใช้ปรัชญาเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง โดยรัฐบาลได้ส่งเสริมการทำเกษตรที่ยั่งยืน การทำเกษตรอินทรีย์ ส่งเสริมตลาดชุมชน สร้างเครือข่ายธุรกิจเพื่อสังคม พัฒนาศักยภาพ SMEs เชื่อมโยงธุรกิจขนาดใหญ่ รวมทั้งการสร้างกลไกในการบริหารจัดการทรัพยากรแหล่งน้ำ ที่ ป่าไม้ ของประเทศ อย่างบูรณาการและยั่งยืน ไม่เสียดุลยภาพทางสังคมและสิ่งแวดล้อม”

แต่ปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นก็ยังไม่สามารถแก้ไขได้ทั้งที่รู้ปัญหาและวิธีแก้ไข เพราะมนุษย์ไม่ยอมที่จะแก้ไขยังยึดติดและเคยชินกับการปฏิบัติแบบเดิม ด้วยเหตุนี้จึงเป็นอุปสรรคของการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน
