มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ เป็นมหาวิทยา

มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยของรัฐแห่งแรกของประเทศไทยที่เปิดสอนหลักสูตรทางด้านการเกษตร ก่อตั้งขึ้นเป็นลำดับที่ 3 ของประเทศ โดยมีปณิธาณในการก่อตั้งเพื่อเป็นคุณประโยชน์แก่การกสิกรรมและการเศรษฐกิจของประเทศ
มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์เริ่มต้นจากการเป็นโรงเรียนช่างไหมในปี พ.ศ. 2447 ต่อมาเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นโรงเรียนการเพาะปลูก หลังจากนั้นรวมเข้ากับโรงเรียนแผนที่เป็นโรงเรียนกระทรวงเกษตราธิการ มีผลให้วิทยาการทางการเกษตรพัฒนาและก้าวหน้า ใน พ.ศ. 2486 รัฐบาลได้ปรับปรุงและรวมกิจการของวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ที่บางเขนกับโรงเรียนวนศาสตร์ (โรงเรียนการป่าไม้เดิม จังหวัดแพร่) มาเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ แรกเริ่ม มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์เปิดสอนเฉพาะด้านการเกษตรเท่านั้น แต่ต่อมาได้ขยายสาขาวิชาครอบคลุมทั้งสังคมศาสตร์ มนุษยศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ประยุกต์ บริหารธุรกิจ และศิลปศาสตร์
ปัจจุบัน มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์อยู่ภายใต้บังคับพระราชบัญญัติมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ พ.ศ. 2541 และอยู่ระหว่างการพิจารณาแปรสภาพจากมหาวิทยาลัยของรัฐเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยในกำกับของรัฐ มีวิทยาเขตที่เปิดทำการสอนทั้งหมด 4 วิทยาเขตได้แก่ วิทยาเขตบางเขน วิทยาเขตกำแพงแสน วิทยาเขตศรีราชา และวิทยาเขตเฉลิมพระเกียรติ จังหวัดสกลนครทั้งยังมีโครงการจัดตั้งวิทยาเขตสุพรรณบุรีอีกหนึ่งแห่งด้วย
มีหน่วยงานที่เปิดการสอน 28 คณะ 2 วิทยาลัย และสถาบันสมทบอีก 2 แห่ง มีหลักสูตรที่เปิดทำการสอน 373 หลักสูตร โดยเป็นหลักสูตรนานาชาติ 38 หลักสูตร นอกจากนี้ ยังได้จัดตั้งสถาบันวิจัยขึ้นตามจังหวัดต่าง ๆ หลายแห่งเพื่อดำเนินการวิจัยในศาสตร์ต่าง ๆ
