ความเป็นมาของโครงการ
โครงการอ่างเก็บน้ำห้วยแม่ยอนตอนบนอันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ อำเภอแม่ทะ จังหวัดลำปาง เป็นโครงการที่สามารถส่งน้ำไปช่วยเหลือพื้นที่เพาะปลูกในช่วงฤดูฝน แก้ไขปัญหาภัยแล้ง ปัญหาน้ำท่วม และเป็นพื้นที่เพื่อการอุปโภค บริโภคของราษฏรในเขตในพื้นที่ลำห้วยแม่ยอน เป็นลำน้ำสาขาของลำห้วยแม่วะ แม่น้ำจาง อยู่ในพื้นที่ลุ่มน้ำวัง อีกด้วย โครงการนี้ได้เริ่มต้นโครงการเมื่อวันที่ 8 กรกฎาคม 2548 โดยนายคมสัน จิตมั่น สมาชิกสภาองค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัดลำปาง เขตอำเภอแม่ทะได้ร้องขอความอนุเคราะห์งบประมาณก่อสร้างอ่างเก็บน้ำแม่ยอนตอน บน ผ่านที่ปรึกษานายกรัฐมนตรี นายพินิจ จันทรสุรินทร์ เพื่อแก้ไขปัญหาภัยแล้งและบรรเทาอุทกภัยในเขตพื้นที่บ้านสันดอนแก้ว อ.แม่ทะ จ.ลำปาง และทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯรับไว้เป็นโครงการอันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริเมื่อ วันที่ 6 พฤษภาคม 2254 เมื่อก่อสร้างแล้วเสร็จ ราษฎรได้รับประโยชน์ 9 หมู่บ้าน 1,200 ไร่ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์หลักเพื่อ เป็นแหล่งน้ำสำหรับทำการเกษตรทั้งในฤดูฝน และฤดูแล้งของราษฎรบ้านสันดอนแก้ว ซึ่งมีหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้อง คือ สำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี สำนักงานคณะกรรมพิเศษเพื่อประสานงานโครงการอันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริกรมและชลประทาน ผู้ได้รับประโยชน์โดยตรงคือ ราษฎร บ้านสันดอนแก้ว หมู่ที่ 1 จำนวน 175 ครัวเรือน ประชากร 611 คน และบ้านแม่วะ หมุ่ที่ 3 จำนวน 237 ครัวเรือน ประชากร 761 คน รวมทั้งสิ้น 412 ครัวเรือน ประชากร 1,372คน
