ในปี พ.ศ.2477 กรมศิลปากรจึงจัดตั้งโรงเรียนประณีตศิลปกรรม โดยมีศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์เป็นผู้อำนวยการและเป็นผู้สอนวิชาศิลปะทั้งทางด้านทฤษฎี และปฏิบัติ โรงเรียนประณีตศิลปกรรมได้ยกฐานะเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ในปี พ.ศ.2486 จนถึงปัจจุบัน นับเป็นโรงเรียนสอนศิลปะสากลแห่งแรกของประเทศสยามและเอเชียอาคเนย์
