question of what response on their part might make
a difference in the drinking behavior and its consequences
upon the family. In particular, does confrontation
of the drinking work? Direct confrontation by
other family members of the alcoholic parent occurred
in four of the ten families. In two of these
cases, the drinking was still going on at the time of
the interview; in the other two, the drinking had
stopped. As far as these particular families are concerned,
confrontation in and of itself does not seem
to provide the necessary stimulus for the alcoholic to
stop drinking. Instead, reportedly, the alcoholic had
to come to terms with the drinking him/herself,
decide that it had gotten way out of hand, and that
there were good reasons to stop drinking before a
