ประวัติเมืองขอนแก่นและท้าวเพียเมืองแพน
ในปี พ.ศ. 2332 ท้าวเพียเมืองแพน ได้พาบุตรพร้อมด้วยผู้คนประมาณ 330 ครอบครัว อพยพจากบ้านชีหล่น
แขวงเมืองสุวรรณภูมิ (ปัจจุบันอยู่ในเขตท้องที่ อำเภออาจสามารถ จังหวัดร้อยเอ็ด)
มาตั้งอยู่ที่บ้านบึงบอน (บ้านเมืองเก่า ตำบลในเมือง อำเภอเมืองขอนแก่น ปัจจุบันนี้)
เดิมขึ้นอยู่กับพระยานครราชสีมา ต่อมามีใบบอกลงมายังกรุงเทพฯและพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลก
มีพระบรมราชโองการยกฐานะบ้านบึงบอนขึ้นเป็น "เมืองขอนแก่น" เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2340 ตั้งให้
"ท้าวศักดิ์" ซึ่งเป็น "ท้าวเพียเมืองแพน" เป็นเจ้าเมืองขอนแก่น มีนามว่า
"พระนครศรีบริรักษ์บรมราชภักดี" หรือผู้ว่าราชการเมืองขอนแก่นคนแรก ตั้งแต่บัดนั้นเป็นต้นมา
การตั้งชื่อเมืองขอนแก่นแต่เดิมท้องถิ่น บ้านขาม ( ตำบลบ้านขาม อำเภอน้ำพอง จังหวัดขอนแก่น
ในปัจจุบัน) มีเนินดินอยู่ตรงกลางทุ่ง

พระอรหันต์ทั้ง 9 พร้อมด้วยพระยาหลังเขียวจึงตกลงสร้างเจดีย์คร่อมต้นมะขามไว้
แล้วบรรจุพระอังคารของพระพุทธเจ้าลงไว้ ชาวบ้านเรียกเจดีย์องค์นี้ว่า "พระธาตุขามแก่น"
เมื่อท้าวเพียเมืองแพนอพยพมาจากบ้านชีหล่น มาตั้งอยู่ที่บ้านบึงบอน จึงได้ถือเอาปูชนียสถานแห่งนี้
เป็นชื่อเมืองขอนแก่น เพราะท่อนไม้แห้ง ๆ เหลือแต่แก่นนั้น ชาวพื้นเมืองจะเรียกว่า "ขอน"
ท้าวเพียเมืองแพน ผู้เป็นปฐมเจ้าเมืองจึงได้ตั้งชื่อเมืองว่า "ขอนแก่น"
เมื่อสร้างเมืองเสร็จแล้ว ท้าวเพียเมืองแพน ได้สร้างวัดขึ้น 3 วัด คือ วัดใต้ (ปัจจุบันคือ
วัดธาตุพระอารามหลวง) วัดกลาง (ปัจจุบันคือ วัดกลางเมืองเก่า) และวัดเหนือ (ปัจจุบันคือ
วัดหนองแวงพระอารามหลวง) เมืองขอนแก่น ตั้งอยู่บ้านดอนพันชาดเป็นเวลา 27
ปีและได้มีการย้ายที่ตั้งหลายครั้ง ที่นานที่สุดคือตั้งที่ตำบลพระลับ 55 ปี
จากนั้นจึงย้ายมาที่ศูนย์ราชการปัจจุบัน มีตำแหน่งที่เรียกว่าพระนครศรีบริรักษ์ 7 คน ที่สำคัญ คือ

จังหวัดขอนแก่น ได้สร้างอนุสาวรีย์ท้าวเพียเมืองแพน บริเวณสนาม เจ ซี (เดิม)

ได้มีพิธีบวงสรวงในช่วงการจัดงานเทศกาลไหมฯ ด้วยเนื่องจากเริ่มมีการแสดง แสง-เสียง
