บุคคลที่มีความสำคัญต่อกล้วยไม้ไทยอีกท่านหนึ่งก็คือ ท่านศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ระพี สาคริก ท่านเป็นผู้หนึ่งที่ได้นำกล้วยไม้ไทยให้นานาอารยประเทศได้รู้จัก โดยท่านได้อุทิศเวลาว่างส่วนตัวในการวางแผนวิจัย และหาทางพัฒนากิจการกล้วยไม้ไทย เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2497 ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2500 ได้เป็นผู้เริ่มก่อตั้งสมาคมกล้วยไม้บางเขน จากเดิมเป็นชมรมกล้วยไม้บางเขน และได้สถาปนาเป็น สมาคมกล้วยไม้แห่งประเทศไทย ในปี พ.ศ. 2512 และอีกสองปีต่อมา สมาคมได้รับพระมหากรุณาธิคุณรับไว้ใน พระบรมราชูปถัมภ์หลังจากนั้นท่านได้ส่งเสริมให้มีการจัดตั้งสมาคมชมรมกล้วย ไม้ ในต่างจังหวัดได้เริ่มนำวิชาการกล้วยไม้มาใช้อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม ในปีพ.ศ. 2504 โดยมีการเปิดสอนวิชากล้วยไม้ในมหาวิทยาลัย เกษตรศาสตร์ จากนั้นได้เริ่มนำวงการกล้วยไม้ไทยออกสู่ตลาดต่างประเทศ โดยท่านจะเป็นองค์ปาฐกในงานชุมนุมกล้วยไม้โลกทุกครั้งตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2506 เป็นต้นมา จากนั้นในปี พ.ศ. 2515 ท่านได้นำงานชุมนุมกล้วยไม้โลกครั้งที่ 9 มาจัดที่ประเทศไทยในปี พ.ศ. 2521 เนื่องจากท่านได้มีบทบาทในงานประชุมกล้วยไม้ต่างๆ จึงได้รับความไว้วางใจ ให้เป็นกรรมการประสานงานงานกล้วยไม้ระดับโลก กรรมการอนุรักษ์กล้วยไม้โลก และกรรมการอื่นๆอีกมากมาย ซึ่งล้วนแต่เป็นเกียรติของประเทศไทยทั้งสิ้น รวมทั้งที่ท่านได้เคยดำรงตำแหน่งรัฐมนตรีช่วยว่าการกระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์อีกด้วย
