ร้อยเอ็ด เป็นจังหวัดในบริเวณลุ่มแม่น้ำชีในภาคอีสานของไทย ที่อดีตเคยเป็นเมืองที่มีความเจริญรุ่งเรืองมาก่อนยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ โดยปรากฏชื่อในตำนานอุรังคธาตุว่า สาเกตนคร หรือ เมืองร้อยเอ็จประตู อันเนื่องมาจากเป็นเมืองที่มีความเจริญรุ่งเรื่องขนาดที่มีเมืองขึ้นมากถึงสิบเอ็ดเมือง แต่จำนวนสิบเอ็ดในสมัยโบราณนั้นประกอบด้วยเลขสิบและเลขหนึ่ง (101) ชื่อเมืองจึงถูกเรียกว่าเมืองร้อยเอ็ดจนทุกวันนี้
