รายงานวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ (1) เพื่อศึกษาความสามารถของนักเรียนด้านทักษะการแสวงหาความรู้ด้วยตนเอง รักการเรียนรู้ และพัฒนาตนเองอย่างต่อเนื่อง ประกอบไปด้วยตัวบ่งชี้ ดังนี้ (1.1) ศึกษาความสามารถของ ผู้เรียนมีนิสัยรักการอ่าน สนใจแสวงหาความรู้จากแหล่งต่าง ๆ รอบตัว (1.2) ศึกษาความสามารถของ ผู้เรียนใฝ่รู้ ใฝ่เรียน สนุกกับการเรียนรู้ และพัฒนาตนเองอยู่เสมอ (1.3) ศึกษาความสามารถของ ผู้เรียนสามารถใช้ห้องสมุด ใช้แหล่งเรียนรู้ และสื่อต่าง ๆ ทั้งภายในและภายนอกสถานศึกษา และ (2) เพื่อเปรียบเทียบความสามารถด้านทักษะการแสวงหาความรู้ด้วยตนเอง รักการเรียนรู้ และพัฒนาตนเองอย่างต่อเนื่อง วัตถุประสงค์หลักของการศึกษาครั้งนี้คือ เพื่อกิจกรรมการอ่านปัจจัยทางด้านทางพุทธศาสนา และสังคมที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมการอ่านทางพุทธศาสนาของเยาวชนไทย โดยการวิจัยครั้งนี้ สามารถนำเสนอภาพรวมการเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมการอ่านทางพุทธศาสนาของเยาวชนไทยในยุคนี้ และคาดว่าเป็นประโยชน์สำหรับผู้วิจัยในการพัฒนาการเรียนการสอน และผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องในการสอนวิชาพระพุทธศาสนาและริเริ่มงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวกับเยาวชนและความรู้ความเข้าใจ และการปฏิบัติตามแนวทางในพระพุทธศาสนา (3)การอ่านเป็นกิจกรรมพื้นฐานสำคัญอันดับแรกที่จะใช้ค้นหาความรู้อันเป็นองค์ประกอบสำคัญของการศึกษาทุกระดับและยังเป็นเครื่องมือในการศึกษาเล่าเรียนได้ตลอดชีวิต องค์การสหประชาชาติได้เสนอให้ประเทศสมาชิกทุกประเทศช่วยกันรณรงค์ให้ทุกคนในการอ่านหนังสือทาให้บุคคลเกิดการพัฒนาความคิด สติปัญญา จริยธรรม ศีลธรรม และเชาวน์ปัญญาได้เป็นอย่างดี รู้จักนาความรู้ที่อ่านมาพัฒนาตนเองการอ่านเป็นการพัฒนาตนเองอย่างมีศักดิ์ศรีที่สุด แม้จะขาดทรัพย์ที่จะไป หาซื้อหนังสือก็ยังมีห้องสมุดที่จะแสวงหาหนังสืออ่านได้(4)นิสัยรักการอ่านเป็นรากฐานแห่งการพัฒนา ประเทศที่พัฒนาแล้ว เช่น สหรัฐอเมริกา ประเทศต่าง ๆ แถบยุโรป ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ล้วนมีประชาชนที่มีนิสัยรักการอ่านทั้งสิ้น นิสัยรักการอ่านไม่ได้เกิดขึ้นเองโดยธรรมชาติ จาเป็นต้องอาศัยการปลูกฝังกระตุ้นและส่งเสริมอย่างต่อเนื่องและการปลูกฝังนิสัยรักการอ่านนั้นจาเป็นต้องได้รับการปลูกฝังตั้งแต่อายุยังน้อยเมื่อครูขาดการเสริมสร้างความสนใจก่อนที่จะสอนอ่าน ขาดหนังสือที่กระตุ้นความสนใจให้นักเรียนอยากอ่าน นักเรียนจึงไม่ได้รับการกระตุ้นและส่งเสริมให้เกิดนิสัยรักการอ่าน สอดคล้องกับรายงานการวิจัยของกรมวิชาการเรื่อง การศึกษาสภาพการอ่านของนักเรียนและการจัดกิจกรรมส่งเสริมการอ่านในโรงเรียน ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ปัจจัยที่มีผลด้านลบต่อการอ่านของนักเรียนคือการจัดกิจกรรมส่งเสริมการอ่านในโรงเรียนยังมีน้อยและนักเรียนไม่มีส่วนร่วมในกิจกรรม
