เนื่องจากสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา น.ส.เอ ( นามสมมุติ) อายุ 23 ปี ชาวจังหวัดนครราชสีมา เข้าปรึกษากับทางเจ้าหน้าที่ชุดสืบสวนสอบสวน สภ.เมืองนครราชสีมาว่าได้ติดต่อสื่อสารกับชายชาวต่างชาติผ่านทางเฟชบุ๊ค ที่ชื่อมิสเตอร์โจ แฮรี่ สัญชาติอังกฤษ นานประมาณ 2 เดือน ฝ่ายชายได้บอกรักและอยากจะแต่งงานด้วย โดยจะส่งเงินประมาณ 3 ล้านบาทเป็นค่าสินสอดประกันไว้ก่อน แต่เงินค่านำเงินดอลล่าห์ผ่านระบบของศุลกากรที่ต้องใช้จ่ายประมาณ 321,560 บาท มีไม่พอ จึงขอให้ช่วยเหลือส่วนหนึ่ง ซึ่งเหยื่อหลงเชื่อโอนเงินผ่านบัญชีธนาคารไปให้ 3 ครั้ง รวมเป็นเงิน 74,560 บาท
ต่อมามิสเตอร์โจได้ติดต่อมาว่าเงินจำนวนดังกล่าวยังไม่พอ และยังคงต้องการเพิ่ม จึงเอะใจสงสัยนำเรื่องเข้าปรึกษากับเจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจ ซึ่งได้ทำการซ้อนแผนจับกุม โดยนัดให้มารับเงินที่ห้างสรรสินค้าแห่งหนึ่ง เมื่อวันที่ 29 พ.ค. กระทั่งถึงเวลานัดหมาย MR.SMITH NNAMDI NIGERIAN ได้มาพบเพื่อรับเงิน โดยอ้างว่ามิสเตอร์โจที่เป็นเพื่อนขอให้มารับเงินแทน เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจจึงจับกุมตัว
นำมาสอบสวนทราบว่า MR.SMITH NNAMDI NIGERIAN ได้เข้ามายังประเทศไทยเพื่อเรียนภาษาไทยที่โรงเรียนสอนภาษาแห่งหนึ่งในจังหวัดนนทบุรี ตั้งแต่วันที่ 31 ม.ค.ที่ผ่านมา และมีพฤติการณ์รวมกลุ่มกับชาวต่างชาติด้วยกันใช้ช่องทางอินเตอร์เน็ต เลือกเหยื่อซึ่งเป็นหญิงสาวชาวไทยที่ต้องการมีคู่รักเป็นชาวต่างชาติ ผ่านทางเอ็มเอสเอ็น เฟซบุ๊ค และสื่อออนไลน์ต่างๆ เพื่อหลอกให้เหยื่อตายใจ พร้อมกับให้หมายเลขโทรศัพท์เพื่อใช้ในการติดต่อ ก่อนที่จะหว่านล้อมให้เหยื่อหลงเชื่อด้วยวิธีการต่างๆเพื่อให้โอนเงินมาให้ ซึ่งเมื่อได้รับเงินแล้วก็จะปิดหมายเลขโทรศัพท์ทิ้งแล้วขาดการติดต่อทั้งหมดทันที เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจจึงแจ้งข้อกล่าวหา MR.SMITH NNAMDI NIGERIAN ฐานะร่วมกันฉ้อโกง และมั่นใจว่าจะยังคงมีผู้ร่วมขบวนการหลงเหลืออยู่อีกจำนวนหนึ่ง ก่อนที่จะควบคุมตัวส่งพนักงานสอบสวน สภ.เมืองนครราชสีมา เพื่อขยายผลไปยังผู้ร่วมขบวนการต่อไป
