สาเหตุของการเกิดไฟป่า

ไฟป่าเกิดจาก 2 สาเหตุ คือ
1. เกิดจากธรรมชาติ
ไฟป่าที่เกิดขึ้นเองตามธรรมชาติเกิดขึ้นจากหลายสาเหตุ เช่นฟ้าผ่า กิ่งไม้เสียดสีกัน ภูเขาไฟระเบิด ก้อนหินกระทบกัน แสงแดดตกกระทบผลึกหิน แสงแดดส่องผ่านหยดน้ำ ปฏิกริยาเคมีในดินป่าพรุ การลุกไหม้ในตัวเองของสิ่งมีชีวิต (Spontaneous Combustion) แต่สาเหตุที่สำคัญ คือ
1.1 ฟ้าผ่า เป็นสาเหตุสำคัญของการเกิดไฟป่าในเขตอบอุ่น ในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา และประเทศแคนาดา พบว่ากว่าครึ่งหนึ่งของไฟป่าที่เกิดขึ้นมีสาเหตุมาจากฟ้าผ่า ทั้งนี้โดยที่ฟ้าผ่าแบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 ประเภท คือ
(1) ฟ้าผ่าแห้ง (Dry or Red Lightning) คือฟ้าผ่าที่เกิดขึ้นในขณะที่ไม่มีฝนตก มักเกิดในช่วงฤดูแล้ง สายฟ้าจะเป็นสีแดง เกิดจากเมฆที่เรียกว่าเมฆฟ้าผ่า ซึ่งเมฆดังกล่าวจะมีแนวการเคลื่อนตัวที่แน่นอนเป็นประจำทุกปี ฟ้าผ่าแห้งเป็นสาเหตุสำคัญของไฟป่าในเขตอบอุ่น
(2) ฟ้าผ่าเปียก (Wet or Blue Lightning) คือฟ้าผ่าที่เกิดควบคู่ไปกับการเกิดพายุฝนฟ้าคะนอง (Thunderstorm) ดังนั้นประกายไฟที่เกิดจากฟ้าผ่าจึงมักไม่ทำให้เกิดไฟไหม้ หรืออาจเกิดได้บ้างแต่ไม่ลุกลามไปไกล เนื่องจากความชื้นสัมพัทธ์และความชื้นของเชื้อเพลิงสูง ฟ้าผ่าในเขตร้อนรวมถึงประเทศไทยมักจะเป็นฟ้าผ่าเปียก จึงแทบจะไม่เป็นสาเหตุของไฟป่าในเขตร้อนนี้เลย

1.2 กิ่งไม้เสียดสีกัน อาจเกิดขึ้นได้ในพื้นที่ป่าที่มีไม้ขึ้นอยู่อย่างหนาแน่นและมีสภาพอากาศแห้งจัด เช่น ในป่าไผ่หรือป่าสน
