รามเกียรติ์ เป็นวรรณคดีสำคัญเรื่องหนึ่งของไทย โดยมีต้นเค้าจากวรรณคดีอินเดีย คือมหากาพย์รามายณะที่ฤๅษีวาลมีกิ[1] ชาวอินเดีย แต่งขึ้นเป็นภาษาสันสกฤต เมื่อประมาณ 2,400 ปีเศษ[2] เชื่อว่าน่าจะเป็นที่รู้จักในหมู่ชาวไทยมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ จากอิทธิพลของลัทธิพราหมณ์ฮินดู โดยแฝงไว้ซึ่งคติยกย่องพระมหากษัตริย์ ซึ่งเชื่อกันว่าเป็นอวตารของพระนารายณ์[3]
