ประวัติความเป็นมา


อาคารบริเวณถนนราชดำเนินกลาง เป็นงานสถาปัตยกรรมที่เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของประวัติศาสตร์กรุงเทพมหานคร นับตั้งแต่มีพระราชดำริของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว(รัชกาลที่ 5) ให้ตัดถนนราชดำเนินจากพระราชวังดุสิตไปยังพระบรมมหาราชวัง โดยจัดวางรูปแบบตามลักษณะของ Champs Elysees ในประเทศฝรั่งเศส



การก่อสร้างถนนราชดำเนินเริ่มตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2442 ส่วนอาคารตลอดแนวถนนราชดำเนินกลางได้เริ่มดำเนินการในปี พ.ศ. 2480 โดยการเวนคืนที่ดินทั้งสองฝั่งถนนข้างละ 40 เมตร และออกแบบโดยสถาปนิกหลายท่าน ได้แก่ มล.ปุ่ม มาลากุล, คุณหมิว อภัยวงศ์ ซึ่งใช้แนวความคิดในการออกแบบจาก Champ Elysees ตามพระราชดำริเดิมของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว



งานก่อสร้างอาคารบนถนนราชดำเนินกลาง ใช้เวลาระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2480 ถึง 2491 มีอาคารจำนวน 15 หลัง ใช้งบประมาณก่อสร้าง 10 ล้านบาท โดยจ้างผู้รับเหมาก่อสร้าง อาทิเช่น บริษัท สง่าวรรณดิศ จำกัด, บริษัทคริสเตียนีแอนด์เนลสัน จำกัด และในขณะเดียวกันได้ก่อสร้างอนุสาวรีย์ประชาธิปไตยในปี พ.ศ. 2482 ด้วย
