พ.ศ. 2461 โรงเรียนฝึกหัดอาจารย์ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “โรงเรียนฝึกหัดครู” เมื่อวันที่ 15 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2461 เปิดสอนหลักสูตรประโยคครูประถม (ป.ป.) หลักสูตร 2 ปี รับนักเรียนจบ ม. 6 และประกาศนียบัตรครูมูล ส่วนครูมัธยมนั้นส่งไปสมทบกับโรงเรียนมัธยมเบื้องปลายที่โรงเรียนสวนกุหลาบวิทยาลัย โรงเรียนมัธยมวัดเทพศิรินทร์ และโรงเรียนมัธยม วัดปทุมคงคา
พ.ศ. 2477 ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูเป็น “โรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูประถมพระนคร”
พ.ศ. 2490 ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูประถมพระนครเป็น “โรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูพระนคร” ผลิตครูตามหลักสูตรประกาศนียบัตรประโยคครูประถม (ป.ป.) ใช้เวลาเรียน 3 ปี
พ.ศ. 2499 ทางการได้ย้ายโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูพระนครจากวังจันทรเกษมมาเปิดสอน ณ เลขที่ 3 หมู่ 6 ถนนแจ้งวัฒนะ ตำบลอนุสาวรีย์ อำเภอบางเขน จังหวัดพระนคร หลัง วัดพระศรีมหาธาตุ เมื่อวันที่ 1 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2499
พ.ศ. 2509 กระทรวงศึกษาธิการได้ยกฐานะโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูพระนครขึ้นเป็น “วิทยาลัยครูพระนคร” เมื่อวันที่ 1 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2509 จึงสามารถเปิดสอนหลักสูตร ระดับประกาศนียบัตรวิชาการศึกษาชั้นสูง (ป.กศ.ชั้นสูง) ที่ใช้เวลาเรียน 2 ปี ได้ และเพื่อสนองความต้องการของโรงเรียนมัธยมแบบประสม วิทยาลัยครูพระนครจึงได้เปิดสอนวิชาเอกอุตสาหกรรมศิลป์ โดยรับนักศึกษาที่จบ ป.กศ. มาเรียนวิชาช่างยนต์ ช่างไฟฟ้า ช่างโลหะ ช่างก่อสร้าง และช่างปั้นดินเผา ต่อมาใน พ.ศ. 2512 จึงได้เปิดสอนวิชาเอก อื่น ๆ เพิ่มขึ้นอีก
พ.ศ. 2517 วิทยาลัยครูพระนครร่วมกับวิทยาลัยวิชาการศึกษาพระนคร ได้เปิดสอนประโยคครูอุดมศึกษาโดยใช้หลักสูตรของวิทยาลัยวิชาการศึกษา รับผู้สำเร็จการศึกษา ป.กศ.ชั้นสูงหรืออนุปริญญามาเรียนต่อ 2 ปี เมื่อสำเร็จการศึกษาจะได้รับคุณวุฒิปริญญาการศึกษาบัณฑิต (กศ.บ.)
พ.ศ. 2518 ได้ประกาศใช้พระราชบัญญัติวิทยาลัยครู เมื่อวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2518 มีผลทำให้วิทยาลัยครูพระนครสามารถเปิดสอนได้ถึงระดับปริญญาตรี ทำให้นักศึกษาที่เรียนหลักสูตรประโยคครูอุดมศึกษาตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2517 สำเร็จการศึกษาระดับปริญญาครุศาสตรบัณฑิต (ค.บ.)
พ.ศ. 2523 เปิดรับนักศึกษาระดับปริญญาครุศาสตรบัณฑิต (ค.บ.)หลักสูตร 4 ปี เป็นรุ่นแรก
พ.ศ. 2527 ได้ประกาศใช้พระราชบัญญัติวิทยาลัยครู (ฉบับที่ 2)ซึ่งเป็นฉบับแก้ไขเพิ่มเติม จึงสามารถเปิดสอนสาขาวิชาการอื่นนอกเหนือจากวิชาชีพครู โดยสภาการฝึกหัดครูอนุมัติให้เปิดสอนใน 3 สาขาวิชา คือ สาขาวิชาการศึกษา สาขาวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ และสาขาวิชาศิลปศาสตร์
พ.ศ. 2538 ได้เปลี่ยนสถานะจากวิทยาลัยครูพระนครเป็น “สถาบันราชภัฏพระนคร” ตามพระราชบัญญัติสถาบันราชภัฏ พ.ศ. 2538 เมื่อวันที่ 25 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2538 โดยพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้า ฯ พระราชทานตราพระราชลัญจกร ซึ่งเป็นตราประจำพระองค์มาเป็นตราสัญลักษณ์ประจำสถาบัน
ต่อมาวันที่ 15 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2547 สถาบันราชภัฏพระนครได้มีสถานะเป็นนิติบุคคล ตามพระราชบัญญัติมหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏ พ.ศ.2547 จึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏพระนคร” เพื่อปฏิบัติภารกิจสถาบันอุดมศึกษาเพื่อการพัฒนาท้องถิ่นมหาวิทยาลัยไทยเพื่อความเป็นไท และเปิดสอนนักศึกษาทั้งระดับปริญญาตรีและบัณฑิตศึกษาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
