ในปี พ.ศ.2483  กองทัพอากาศได้จัดตั้งกองการบินพลเรือนขึ้นเพื่อดำเนินงานเกี่ยวกับการบิน ระหว่างประเทศ และอีก 8 ปีต่อมาก็ได้ยกฐานะจากกองเป็นกรม และได้ปรับปรุงสนามบินดอนเมืองเป็นท่าอากาศยานสากลเรียกว่า  "ท่าอากาศยานดอนเมือง” ก่อนเปลี่ยนมาใช้ชื่ออย่างเป็นทางการว่า " ท่าอากาศยานกรุงเทพ ” เมื่อวันที่ 21 มิถุนายน พ.ศ.2498 ต่อมา รัฐสภาได้ตราพระราชบัญญัติว่าด้วยการท่าอากาศยานแห่งประเทศไทย พ.ศ.2522 โดยกำหนดให้จัดตั้งการท่าอากาศยานขึ้นเรียกว่า การท่าอากาศยานแห่งประเทศไทย หรือ ทอท. และให้ใช้ชื่อภาษาอังกฤษว่า Airports Authority of Thailand ย่อว่า AATโดยมีพนักงาน ทอท.ได้เข้าปฏิบัติงานตามพระราชบัญญัตินี้  เมื่อวันที่ 1 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ.2522  จึงได้ถือเอาวันนี้เป็นวันสถาปนา ทอท.

นับ ตั้งแต่เริ่มดำเนินกิจการท่าอากาศยานกรุงเทพ เมื่อวันที่ 1 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ.2522 ทอท.ได้ปรับเปลี่ยนแนวการบริหารงานเป็นเชิงธุรกิจมากยิ่งขึ้น การบริหารงานท่าอากาศยานกรุงเทพมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงและพัฒนาไปอย่างมาก จนทำให้ ทอท.เป็นรัฐวิสาหกิจที่มีฐานะที่มั่นคง และมีศักยภาพที่จะพัฒนาท่าอากาศยานของไทยให้ก้าวหน้าขึ้นไปอีก ซึ่งต่อมา ทอท.ได้รับโอนท่าอากาศยานสากลในส่วนภูมิภาคอีก 4 แห่งจากกรมการบินพาณิชย์มาดำเนินการตามลำดับ ได้แก่ ท่าอากาศยานเชียงใหม่ (รับโอนเมื่อวันที่ 1 มีนาคม พ.ศ.2531) ท่าอากาศยานหาดใหญ่ (รับโอน เมื่อวันที่ 26 สิงหาคม พ.ศ.2531) ท่าอากาศยานภูเก็ต (รับโอนเมื่อวันที่ 8 ตุลาคม พ.ศ.2531) และท่าอากาศยานเชียงราย (รับโอนเมื่อวันที่ 2 ตุลาคม พ.ศ.2541 และพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวพระราชทานพระบรมราชานุญาตให้ ท่าอากาศยานเชียงราย ใช้ชื่อใหม่ว่า "ท่าอากาศยานแม่ฟ้าหลวง เชียงราย” เมื่อวันที่ 13 มีนาคม พ.ศ.2553) และเข้าบริหารท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ เมื่อวันที่ 4 สิงหาคม 2546 โดย ทอท.ได้ปรับปรุงอาคารสถานที่และสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกต่าง ๆ ของท่าอากาศยานเหล่านั้นเพื่อเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพในการให้บริการทุก ๆ ด้าน และได้จัดทำแผนพัฒนาท่าอากาศยานให้สอดคล้องกับการเจริญเติบโตของการขนส่งทาง อากาศที่เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็ว
