ความสำคัญ

ประเพณีตานก๋วยสลากเป็นประเพณีในพุทธศาสนาที่สำคัญอย่างหนึ่งในล้านนาไทย ซึ่งสืบเนื่องมาจากค่านิยมที่สืบทอดมาช้านานคือ
๑. ประชาชนว่างจากภารกิจการทำนา
๒. ประชาชนหยุดพักไม่เดินทางไกลเพราะเป็นฤดูฝน
๓. พระสงฆ์จำพรรษาอยู่อย่างพรักพร้อม
๔. ผลไม้มากและกำลังสุก เช่นส้มโอ ส้มเกลี้ยง กล้วย อ้อยฯลฯ
๕. ได้โอกาสสงเคราะห์คนยากจน เป็นสังฆทาน
๖. ถือว่ามีอานิสงส์แรง คนทำบุญจะมีโชคลาภ
๗. มีโอกาสหาเงินและวัสดุบำรุงวัด
ก๋วยสลากแบ่งเป็น ๒ ประเภท คือ
๑. สลากน้อย หรือก๋วยเล็ก ใช้อุทิศแด่ผู้ตาย หรือเป็นกุศลมากขึ้น
๒. สลากก๋วยใหญ่ หรือสลากโชค หรือเป็นสลากที่บรรจุในก๋วยใหญ่ใช้เป็นมหากุศลสำหรับบุคคลที่มีกำลังศรัทธา และมีเงินทองมาก ทำถวายเพื่อเป็นปัจจัยภายหน้า ให้มีบุญกุศลมากขึ้น

พิธีกรรม

พิธีกรรมในประเพณีตานก๋วยสลากมี ๒ วัน คือ
๑. ก่อนทำพิธี"ตานก๋วยสลาก" ๑ วัน เรียกว่าวันดาเป็นวันจัดเตรียมสิ่งของเพื่อใส่ในก๋วยสลาก ผู้ชายจะตัดไม้มาจักตอกสลากก๋วย (ชะลอม) ไว้หลายๆใบตามศรัทธาและกำลังทรัพย์ ฝ่ายหญิงจะจัดเตรียมสิ่งของที่จะนำมาบรรจุในก๋วย เช่นข้าวสาร พริกแห้ง หอม กระเทียม เกลือ กะปิ น้ำปลา ขนม เมี่ยง บุหรี่ ไม้ขีดไฟ เทียนไข สีย้อมผ้า ผลไม้ รวมทั้งเครื่องใช้ต่าง ๆ แล้วบรรจุลงในก๋วยสลากที่กรุด้วยใบตอง ใบหมากผู้หมากเมีย"ใส่ยอด" คือธนบัตร ผูกติดไม้ เสียบไว้ในก๋วยให้ส่วนยอดหรือธนบัตรโผล่มาแล้วรวบปากก๋วยสลากตกแต่งด้วยดอกไม้ "ยอด" หรือธนบัตรที่ใส่นั้นไม่จำกัดว่าเป็นจำนวนเท่าใด
