วัดมะขามตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ฝั่งตะวันออก ในท้องที่ หมู่ที่ ๓ ตำบลบ้านกลาง อำเภอเมืองปทุมธานี จังหวัดปทุมธานี สังกัดคณะสงฆ์ มหานิกาย ได้สร้างขึ้นเมื่อประมาณ พุทธศักราช ๒๑๗๐ ในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา โดยชาวมอญที่อพยพ เข้ามาพึ่งพระบรมโพธิสมภาร ของพระมหากษัตริย์ไทย เมื่อได้ตั้งหลักปักฐานมั่นคงแล้ว โดยอุปนิสัย รักสงบ ยึดมั่นในระเบียบประเพณี และนับถือพระพุทะศาสนาอย่างเคร่งครัด จึงได้รวมตัวกันสร้างวัดขึ้นมา เพื่อเป็นที่ยึดเหนี่ยวจิตใจ ประการกุศลต่างๆ สืบต่อกันมา โดยสถานที่สร้างนั้นสันนิฐานว่าจะมีต้นมะขามขี้นอยู่มาก หรือจะมีต้นมะขามใหญ่ บ้างก็่ว่าเป็นชื่อบ้านเดิมมาจากเมืองมอญ จึงตั้งชื่อวัดว่า “วัดมะขาม” ครั้นต่อมาการคมนาคมมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงเนื่องจากแม่น้ำที่ขุดลัดผ่านมีขนาดกว้างขึ้น แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาสายเดิมตื้นเขิน จึงได้ทำการสร้างวัดขึ้นใหม่หันหน้าลงแม่น้ำสายใหม่ จึงทำให้มี วัดมะขามสองวัดโดยเรียกวัดที่สร้างขึ้นใหม่ว่า “วัดมะขามนอก” และอีกชื่อหนึ่งชื่อ”วัดมะขามเหนือ” ส่วนวัดมะขามเดิมเรียกว่า”วัดมะขามใน”
