เมื่ออุตสาหกรรมในประเทศเริ่มเติบโต ก็จะมีอุตสาหกรรมต่างๆตามมา เช่น อุตสาหกรรมอิเล็กทรอนิกส์. อุตสาหกรรมอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ในประเทศไทยมีอายุกว่า 40 ปี โดยเริ่มต้นเมื่อรัฐบาลดำเนินนโยบายการพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมทดแทนการนำเข้า ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2504 จนถึงปัจจุบัน

อุตสาหกรรมอิเล็กทรอนิกส์แบ่งออกเป็น 4 ขั้นตอน ดังนี้ อุตสาหกรรมขั้นต้น คือ การผลิตเวเฟอร์ (wafer) อุตสาหกรรมขั้นกลาง คือ การผลิตแผงวงจรไฟฟ้ารวม (IC) และแผ่นวงจรพิมพ์ (PCB) อุตสาหกรรมขั้นปลาย คือ การประกอบอุปกรณ์ชิ้นส่วนอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ ลงบนแผ่นวงจรพิมพ์เป็นแผ่นวงจรสำเร็จรูป (PCBA) และนำไปประกอบและผลิตเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ในอุตสาหกรรมต่อเนื่อง
