                พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมีพลอดุลยเดช หรือที่รู้จักกันทั่วไปคือ ในหลวง มีพระนามเดิมว่า พระวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าภูมิพลอดุลยเดช  เป็นพระราชโอรสพระองค์เล็ก ในสมเด็จเจ้าฟ้ามหิดลอดุลยเดช กรมหลวงสงขลานครินทร์  และสมเด็จพระราชชนนีศรีสังวาลย์ ทรงพระราชสมภพเมื่อวันจันทร์วันที่ ๕  ธันวาคม พุทธศักราช  ๒๔๗๐  ณ โรงพยาบาลเคมบริดจ์  เมืองเคมบริดจ์ รัฐแมสชาชูเชนต์ สหรัฐอเมริกา  เมื่อพุทธศักราช  ๒๔๗๑ ได้โดยเสด็จสมเด็จพระบรมราชชนก ซึ่งทรงสำเร็จการศึกษา ปริญญาแพทยศาสตร์บัณฑิตเกียรตินิยม  จากมหาวิทยาลัยฮาร์วาร์ด ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เสด็จกลับประเทศไทย  ประทับ ณ วังสระปทุม และในวันที่ ๕ พฤษภาคม พุทธศักราช ๒๔๙๓ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ตั้งการพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษกตามแบบอย่างโบราณราชประเพณีขึ้น ณ พระที่นั่งไพศาลทักษิณ ในพระบรมมหาราชวัง ได้เสด็จเถลิงถวัลราชสมบัติเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์แห่ง พระบรมราชจักรีวงศ์ รัชกาลที่ ๙ ขณะมีพระชนมพรรษา ๑๙ พรรษา เฉลิมพระบรมนามาภิไธย  ตามที่จารึกในพระสุพรรณบัฏว่า "พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช มหิตลาธิเบศร รามาธิบดี จักรนฤบดินทร สยามมินทราธิราช บรมนาถบพิตร" พร้อมทั้งพระราชทานพระปฐมบรมราชโองการว่า  "เราจะครองแผ่นดินโดยธรรม เพื่อประโยชน์สุขแห่งมหาชนชาวสยาม"  ปัจจุบันได้ทรงย้ายที่ประทับจากพระที่นั่งอัมพรสถาน พระราชวังดุสิตไปประทับที่พระตำหนักจิตรลดารโหฐาน  พระราชวังดุสิต
