กรมส่งเสริมอุตสาหกรรม ร่วมกับ มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีพระจอมเกล้าธนบุรี จึงได้ริเริ่มโครงการสาธิตการใช้รถโดยสารที่ใช้เอทานอลเป็นเชื้อเพลิงขึ้นในประเทศไทย เพื่อเป็นการนำร่องในการส่งเสริมการใช้เอทานอลในรถโดยสารขนาดใหญ่ ซึ่งจะทำให้สามารถศึกษาทั้งข้อดีและข้อจำกัดของเทคโนโลยีดังกล่าวกับสภาวะแวดล้อมเช่นในประเทศไทย รวมไปถึงแนวทางและปัญหาอุปสรรคในการส่งเสริมเชิงนโยบายของภาครัฐในการใช้เอทานอลทดแทนการใช้เชื้อเพลิงดีเซลอย่างจริงจัง โดยประโยชน์ที่คาดว่าจะได้รับจากโครงการดังกล่าว จะก่อให้เกิดผลดีหลายด้าน เช่น เสริมสร้างความมั่นคงทางพลังงานในระดับประเทศ
จากการช่วยลดปริมาณการใช้น้ำมันดีเซล ซึ่งเป็นตัวแปรที่สำคัญที่ช่วยลดการนำเข้าน้ำมันดิบจากต่างประเทศช่วยลดผลกระทบด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม เนื่องจากเอทานอลเป็นผลิตผลทางการเกษตรที่มีการหมุนเวียนการใช้ก๊าซคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ (CO2) และเกิดกระบวนการเผาไหม้ที่สะอาดกว่าเชื้อเพลิงฟอสซิล นอกจากนี้ผลที่ได้ของโครงการนี้ยังมีความเป็นไปได้ที่จะสามารถเข้าร่วมโครงการ Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) ได้อีกทางหนึ่งด้วย รวมถึงการช่วยให้เกษตรกรมีรายได้ที่ดีขึ้น จากการเพาะปลูกและขายพืชผลทางการเกษตร
