อุทยานแห่งชาติภูผาเหล็ก ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ในส่วนของอำเภอส่องดาว อำเภอวาริชภูมิ อำเภอนิคมน้ำอูน อำเภอกุดบาก จังหวัดสกลนคร อำเภอสามหมอ จังหวัดอุดรธานี และอำเภอสมเด็จ อำเภอคำม่วง จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์ มีเนื้อที่ 261,875 ไร่ ลักษณะภูมิประเทศเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเทือกเขาภูพาน ภูเขาที่สูงที่สุดคือ ภูอ่างสอ สภาพป่าเป็นป่าเต็งรัง ป่าเบญจพรรณ ป่าดิบแล้ง ไผ่หลายชนิด และสมุนไพรชนิดต่าง ๆ สัตว์ป่าที่พบเห็นได้แก่ หมูป่า เก้ง กระจง นกชนิดต่าง ๆแหล่งท่องเที่ยวบนยอดภูผาเหล็กโดยเฉพาะบริเวณหน้าผาต่าง ๆ หอส่องดาว สามารถใช้รถยนต์ขึ้นไปตามถนน รพช. จากที่ทำการอุทยานฯ ถึงหอส่องดาวระยะทาง 5.5 กิโลเมตร และใช้เส้นทางเดินเท้าสู่จุดท่องเที่ยว
สถานที่น่าสนใจในเขตอุทยานฯ ได้แก่
ผาสุริยันต์ เป็นหน้าผาสูงอยู่บนยอดเขาสูงสุดของภูผาเหล็ก เป็นจุดชมวิวที่สวยงาม และเป็นจุดชมพระอาทิตย์ขึ้นในยามเช้า
ผาดงก่อ เป็นหน้าผาสูงอยู่บนยอดภูผาเหล็กอันเป็นยอดสูงสุดของเทือกเขาภูพาน มีก้อนหินขนาดใหญ่วางพาดอยู่ริมหน้าผาที่ดูเหมือนจะหล่นลงไปข้างล่าง หากยืนบนภูเขาแห่งนี้จะมองเห็นทิวเขาอันสลับซับซ้อนของภูพาน และมองเห็นภูผาหัก ภูไม้ ภูซากลาก อยู่ในเขตอำเภอวังสามหมอ ของจังหวัดอุดรธานี

ลานอุษาสวรรค์ เป็นบริเวณที่ราบบนยอดภูผาเหล็ก มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ ๑,๕๕๐ ไร่ มีสภาพเป็นทุ่งป่าละเมาะ เขา และโขดหิน สลับกับทุ่งหญ้า ดูคล้ายสวนประดิษฐ์ มีดอกไม้ป่าขึ้นมากมาย เช่น สารดอย เอนอ้า ดาวเรืองภูม้าวิ่ง หญ้าข้าวก่ำ กระดุมเงิน ดุสิตา ฯลฯ
สุสานไดโนเสาร์ ตั้งอยู่บริเวณกลางเขาภูผาเหล็ก อำเภอส่องดาว จังหวัดสกลนคร และบริเวณชายป่าภูพาน อำเภอคำม่วง จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์ มีลักษณะเป็นกระดูกสัตว์ที่กลายเป็นหินมีอายุหลายล้านปีทับถมกันจำนวนมาก บางส่วนยังฝังอยู่ในหินและดิน บางแห่งเป็นฟอสซิลของพืช เช่น ไม้กลายเป็นหิน
หอส่องดาว ตั้งอยู่บนยอดภูผาเหล็กมีความสูงจากระดับน้ำทะเลประมาณ ๗๐๐ เมตร สามารถมองเห็นทัศนียภาพได้รอบด้าน หอส่องดาวจึงเป็นที่สำหรับศึกษาดวงดาวในเวลากลางคืน สามารถชมปรากฏการณ์ฝนดาวตกได้ชัดเจนมาก
