ประวัติมหาวิทยาลัย และส่วนสำคัญๆ ในมหาวิทยาลัย
1. เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่สถาปนาขึ้นเป็นลำดับที่ 3 ของประเทศไทย (ต่อจากจุฬาฯ และธรรมศาสตร์) แต่หลังจากนั้นอีก 5 วันก็มีการสถาปนามหาวิทยาลัยแพทยศาสตร์(เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น ม.มหิดล ในปี 2512)ขึ้น และอีก 8 เดือนต่อมา ก็มีการสถาปนามหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร เป็นอันว่าประเทศไทยมีมหาวิทยาลัยที่เชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะทางครบทุกด้าน
2. วันสถาปนามหาวิทยาลัยคือ 2 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2486 (สมัย ร.๘)
3. อธิการบดีคนแรกคือ หลวงสินธุสงครามชัย หรือ พลเรือเอกสินธุ์ กมลนาวิน หนึ่งในคณะราษฎร์
4. สามบูรพาจารย์หรือสามเสือเกษตรผู้ให้กำเนิดมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ คือ
(1) หลวงสุวรรณวาจกสิกิจ (ทองดี เรศานนท์)
(2) หลวงอิงคศรีกสิการ (ศาสตราจารย์พิเศษ อินทรี จันทรสถิตย์)
(3) พระช่วงเกษตรศิลปาการ (ช่วง โลจายะ)
อาจารย์ม.เกษตรยุคแรกๆ ส่วนใหญ่จบมาจากฟิลลิปปินส์และอเมริกา จึงได้วัฒนธรรม SOTUS มาจากที่นั่น จะต่างจากธรรมศาสตร์ที่อาจารย์ส่วนใหญ่จบฝรั่งเศสเลยไม่มีวัฒนธรรม SOTUS
5. คณะแรกตั้งมี 4 คณะ คือ คณะเกษตร คณะวนศาสตร์ คณะประมง และคณะสหกรณ์ (ต่อมาเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นคณะเศรษฐศาสตร์และบริหารธุรกิจ และแยกเป็นคณะเศรษฐศาสตร์ และคณะบริหารธุรกิจตามลำดับ)
6. ตราสัญลักษณ์ประจำมหาวิทยาลัย เป็นรูปพระพิรุณทรงนาค ด้านบนมีข้อความว่า “มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์” ด้านล่างมีข้อความว่า “พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๖” (ในห้องเชียร์จะให้ท่องแบบคำต่อคำตามที่ประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา ไปหาท่องกันเอาเองนะครับ55+)
7. อาคารประจำมหาวิทยาลัย คืออาคารหอประชุมใหญ่ ด้านหัวมุมถนนพหลโยธินและถนนงามวงศ์วาน เป็นศิลปะไทยประยุกต์ลดรูปเหมือนมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์(ท่าพระจันทร์) ซึ่งได้ข่าวว่าเป็นความคิดของท่านจอมพล ป. ที่ท่านไม่อยากให้คงศิลปะไทยเต็มรูปแบบไว้มากเหมือนอาคารมหาจุฬาลงกรณ์ที่จุฬาฯ และลักษณะเด่นของอาคารคือ “จั่วสามมุข” ซึ่งจะปรากฎในหลายๆอาคารในมหาวิทยาลัยในเวลาต่อมา (ที่มาของจั่วสามมุขคือ สมัยที่เรายังเป็นโรงเรียนเกษตราธิการ เราใช้วังวินด์เซอร์เป็นที่ทำการ ซึ่งวังวินด์เซอร์ก็มีลักษณะอาคารเป็นจั่วสามมุขเหมือนกัน ปัจจุบันวังวินด์เซอร์ถูกรื้อสร้างสนามศุภชราศัย)
8. เพลงประจำมหาวิทยาลัย คือ “เพลงพระราชนิพนธ์เกษตรศาสตร์” ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวพระราชทานให้วันที่ 17 ธันวาคม 2509 เป็น 1 ใน 3 เพลงประจำสถาบันที่เป็นเพลงพระราชนิพนธ์ โดย ศ.ดร.ประเสริฐ ณ นคร เป็นผู้แต่งคำร้อง (ผู้แต่งเนื้อร้องเพลง “ใกล้รุ่ง” ซึ่งเสียงของไก่ในเพลงใกล้รุ่ง ก็คือเสียงของไก่ที่เกษตรบางเขนนี่แหล่ะ) ท่านใช้เวลาแต่งนานมาก เพราะของจุฬานั้นสง่างาม และของธรรมศาสตร์นั้นองอาจยิ่งนัก ส่วนของเกษตรเรา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทรงตรัสไว้ว่า “...เป็นเพลงที่อ่อนหวาน อ่อนหวานกว่าเพลงโน้ต แต่อ่อนหวาน นี่ไม่ได้หมายความว่าไม่เข้มแข็ง...”
9. ต้นไม้ประจำมหาวิทยาลัย คือต้น “นนทรี” โดยมีการเลือกต้นไม้ประจำมหาวิทยาลัยจากต้นไม้ 4 ชนิด คือ ต้นทองกวาว ต้นราชพฤกษ์ ต้นพิกุล และต้นนนทรี
10. พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวและสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้ทรงปลูกต้นนนทรีไว้ 9 ต้น บริเวณหน้าหอประชุมใหญ่ ในวันที่ 29 พฤศจิกายน 2506 (ฝั่งซ้ายของหอประชุม 5 ต้น ฝั่งขวา 4 ต้น) หลังจากนั้นก็ได้ทรงดนตรีต่อที่หอประชุมใหญ่ ชาวเกษตรจึงถือวันที่ 29 พฤศจิกายนของทุกปี เป็นวันที่ระลึก “นนทรีทรงปลูก ดนตรีทรงโปรด” ซึ่งในปัจจุบัน สมเด็จเจ้าฟ้าหญิงจุฬาภรณ์ฯ ก็ทรงมาทรงดนตรีที่อาคารจักรฯ กับนิสิตเกษตรทุกๆ ปี
11. สีประจำมหาวิทยาลัยคือ “สีเขียวใบไม้” (เขียวธรรมดาไม่ได้ ต้องเขียวใบไม้นะครับ ^^)
12. คำขวัญประจำมหาวิทยาลัยคือ “ประชาชนคือเจ้าของประเทศ เกษตรศาสตร์คือภาษีของประชาชน” (เนื่องจากต้องการให้นิสิตเกษตรทุกคนรำลึกว่า มหาวิทยาลัยเราก่อตั้งมาจากภาษีของประชาชน ดังนั้นนิสิตเกษตรต้องทำงานตอบแทนประชาชน)
13. คติพจน์ประจำมหาวิทยาลัยคือ “ศาสตร์แห่งแผ่นดิน” (มาจากคำว่า “เกษตร” ซึ่งแปลว่า “แผ่นดิน”)
14. สัตว์ประจำมหาวิทยาลัยคือ “ไก่” เพราะหลวงสุวรรณฯ ท่านได้ชื่อว่าเป็น “บิดาแห่งการเลี้ยงไก่ของไทย”
15. มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์มี 4 วิทยาเขตหลักๆ คือ
- วิทยาเขตบางเขน หรือ “เกษตรกลาง” มีพื้นที่แปดร้อยกว่าไร่ (มหาวิทยาลัยเรานับพื้นที่ยาก เพราะในเขตรั้วมหาวิทยาลัยมีกระทรวง กรม กอง และโรงเรียนปนกันเยอะไปหมด) เห็นว่าสมัยก่อนรั้วเราอยู่ติดกับทางรถไฟด้านถนนวิภาวดีฯ และรั้วอีกด้านอยู่กลางถนนงามวงศ์วานปัจจุบัน (เสียพื้นที่เพื่อส่วนรวมไปเยอะเหมือนกัน)
- วิทยาเขตกำแพงแสน จ.นครปฐม เริ่มก่อตั้งตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2510 บนพื้นที่แปดพันกว่าไร่ (ใหญ่กว่าบางเขนเป็นสิบเท่า) ต้นไม้ที่นี่ปลูกสองข้างถนนสวยงามมาก ทั้งชมพูพันธุ์ทิพย์ และนนทรี
